Week of September 11th-September 15th

*Due to the fact that we meet with Fr. Marc on Mondays, the students will be required to read for 20 minutes at home; no written reading log is required.  Please monitor your child that they are following this very important rule.  Tuesday-Friday, DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Time, has been incorporated within the schedule; if a student does not finish the reading log within the period, they are required to finish it at home; however, they should have plenty of time to complete them in class.

*Please have your Non-fiction book in school by Monday, September 11th.*

Grade 5– This week, the students will be working in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. They will be reading the Russian Folktale: “Why Bear Sleeps So Much” and using context clues to develop a meaning of each vocabulary word.  We will then be reviewing each words part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  Next, the students will be developing creative stories using at least five of the vocabulary words; they will be using a graphic organizer to help them during this writing activity.  

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, September 11th: 1). Make sure your illustrations and sentences from class are completed; we will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game tomorrow!

Tuesday, September 12th: 1). Complete pages 10-11 in your Vocabulary Workshop book-Match the Meaning, Synonyms, and Antonyms. 

Wednesday, September 13th: 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Complete Vocabulary Workshop pages 12-13. 3). Finish your rough draft of the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy essay!

Thursday, September 14th: 1). Be sure your reading log is completed from today! 2). Write your Spelling/Vocabulary words 3 x each. 3). Type your essay based on “What Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy Means to Me?”

Grade 6– This week, the students will be working in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. They will be reading a <First-Person Narrative> City of Gold and using context clues to develop a meaning for most of the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each words part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  The students will also be working with a partner/group and focusing on completing the sentence using the words and deciphering how vocabulary is used in context.  Lastly, they will be writing an essay based on trade and how it differs from the 1400s and today. They will be using a Venn Diagram to list the similarities and differences which will help them with their writing.

Wednesday, September 13th: 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required 2). Vocabulary Workshop pages 19-21; DO NOT DO THE WRITING PROMPT! 3). Bring in research regarding trade in the 1400s and trade from today. We will be working on a writing prompt tomorrow, and this information will help you. 4). Type your final draft of the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy essay!

Thursday, September 14th: 1). Be sure your reading log is completed from today! 2). Finish your Venn Diagram from today based on trade; bring that with your essay, tomorrow.

They will be reading a <Narrative Nonfiction> The Times of Zheng He and using context clues to develop a meaning for most of the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each words part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  The students will also be working with a partner/group and focusing on completing the sentence using the words and deciphering how vocabulary is used in context.  Lastly, they will be writing an essay based on traits/qualities that make a person successful. 

Religion– This week, the students will be focusing on Chapter 1: “The Source of All Life” in their We Live Our Faith As Disciples of Jesus book.  They will be focusing on the question-How do I know God is present in my life?.  They will be working with a partner and creating a screensaver that shows something in life that helps one to know that there is a source and purpose behind everything that exists. They will then be reading and outlining about how God created us to know him and how God makes himself known. We will also be discussing how God gives us the gift of faith and how the Church gives witness to God’s presence.  The students will be answering comprehension questions and defining: faith, Church, and grace.

They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  The students will also be working with a partner/group and focusing on completing the sentence using the words and deciphering how vocabulary is used in context.  Lastly, they will be writing an essay based on teens and chores.
