Week of September 23rd-September 27th

Reminders:

1). Grades 6 and 7 will be going to Fr. Marc on Monday, September 23rd. 

2). There is a Home Academy Association Meeting on Wednesday, September 25th, at 7:00 P.M. 

3). Band Registration forms are due on Thursday, September 26th.

 

Grade 5- This week the students will finish practicing how to complete a main idea organizer that includes key details based on a scientific account.  They will be using this information and writing a paragraph with their findings. The students will also be independently reading a science article: from “When Stars Explode” and answering various multiple choice and short answer questions. Next, the students will be introduced to Unit 1 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books.  First, they will be reading the Russian Folktale-“Why Bear Sleeps So Much” and using context clues to determine the meanings of the words. Next, they will be identifying each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be writing sentences and drawing illustrations using each word.  The students will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review the meanings as well. Lastly, the students will be working in groups, focusing on “Completing the Sentence” and “Words Associations”. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

*”Wings for the King” Exam must be signed and corrected for Monday, September 23rd!*

Monday, September 23rd- 1). Complete a written reading log. 2). Be sure page 17 (organizer and short response) is completed in your Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book.

Tuesday, September 24th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Be sure NY Ready book is completed-pages 18-23 are completed. 

Wednesday, September 25th- 1). Finish your sentences and illustrations from class based on Unit 1 spelling/vocabulary words; we will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game tomorrow! 2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

Thursday, September 26th- 1). Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop pages 10-11: “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 2). Write each vocabulary word 3 x each. 3). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required.

Upcoming Exam: Unit 1 Spelling/ Vocabulary: Wednesday, October 2nd   (“Basketball Jeopardy”-Tuesday, October 1st) 

 

Grade 6- This week the students will continue focusing on determining central idea and details. They will independently be reading a scientific article: from “Against All Odds: Earth’s Fragile Pioneers” and answering various multiple choice questions and one extended response question.  Next, the students will be introduced to Unit 1 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books.  First, they will be reading a <First-Person Narrative> “City of Gold” and using context clues to determine the meanings of most of the words. Next, they will be identifying each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be writing sentences and drawing illustrations using each word.  The students will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review the meanings as well.

Grade 7- This week the students will finish focusing on analyzing the development of the central idea; they will be reading a biography: “Martha Graham:Modern Dance Innovator” and answering various multiple choice questions along with an extended response question. Next, the students will be introduced to Unit 1 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books.  First, they will be reading a <Narrative Nonfiction> “The Times of Zheng He” and using context clues to determine the meanings of most of the words. Next, they will be identifying each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be writing sentences and drawing illustrations using each word.  The students will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review the meanings as well. 

Religion- This week, the students will continue focusing on Chapter 1: “The Source of All Life”.  They will be reading and discussing how God created us got know him and how God made himself known.  They will also be discussing how God gives us faith and how the Church gives witness to God’s presence. Lastly, the students will be reading about St. Paul and completing the chapter review. They will be presenting their creation screensaver as well.

Next, they will be identifying each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be writing sentences and drawing illustrations using each word.  The students will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review the meanings as well.
