Week of September 10th-September 14th

 

Reminders:

*There have been a few changes to reading logs for this year; I will be discussing this with the students on Friday, September 14th; I just ask that each student have a non-fiction book in on Monday, September 17th, for me to approve. Thank you!

*Students will be attending weekly mass each Monday at 8:30 a.m. They may bring in a snack on this day as well. 

Gym classes will now be taking place each Monday. 

 

Grade 5– This week, the students will be working in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. They will be reading the Russian Folktale: “Why Bear Sleeps So Much” and using context clues to develop a meaning for each vocabulary word.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing “Pictionary” and the “Sentence Game” to review each of the words.  The students will also be developing a short story with a partner using as many Unit 1 words as they can; we will be discussing how to organize writing prior to beginning a rough draft. The students will be using a web to brainstorm their ideas for their creative story. They will be sharing their stories with the class on Friday, and we will also be discussing reading logs. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, September 10th: 1). Make sure your illustrations and (detailed) sentences from class are completed; highlight or underline the vocabulary word in each sentence; we will be playing “Pictionary” and the “Sentence Game” tomorrow!

Tuesday, September 11th: 1). Complete pages 10-11 in your Vocabulary Workshop book-“Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 2). Write vocabulary words 1-6 3 X each.

Wednesday, September 12th: 1). Complete pages 12-13 in your Vocabulary Workshop book-“Completing the Sentence” and “Word Associations”. 2). Write vocabulary words 7-12 3 X each.

Thursday, September 13th: 1). Make sure the rough draft of your creative story is completed; remember, I must see your revisions; use a different color pen. Type or neatly write your final draft; I will be collecting both your rough draft and final draft tomorrow.  You will be sharing your story with the class tomorrow as well!

Grade 6– This week, the students will be working in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. They will be reading a <First-Person Narrative> “City of Gold” and using context clues to develop a meaning for most of the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing “Pictionary” and the “Sentence Game” to review each of the words.  The students will also be working on a writing prompt which will incorporate three or more vocabulary words from Unit 1.  They will have to look back at the reading- “City of Gold” and develop a journal entry in which they pretend they are traveling with traders to Timbuktu. They must discuss what excites and worries them about their travels to Timbuktu. The students will be sharing their entries with the class, and we will be discussing changes that have been made to reading logs as well.

Grade 7– This week, the students will be working in their “Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop” books. They will be reading a <Narrative Nonfiction> “The Times of Zheng He” and using context clues to develop a meaning for most of the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing “Pictionary” and the “Sentence Game” to review each of the words. Next, the students will be developing a web on qualities/personality traits that make a person successful; they will be using their web to guide them with their writing prompt essay- “What do you think are qualities, or personality traits, that make a person successful?” The students will be developing their rough draft and editing their essay in class, too.  They will be sharing their final drafts with the class as well.  There have been some changes to reading logs-which we will be discussing this week, too. 

Religion– This week, the students will be focusing on the question-“How do I know God is present in my life?”.  With a partner, they will be creating a billboard that shows something in life that helps one to know that there is a source and purpose behind everything that exists. Their billboard must be accompanied by a powerful motto, too. The students will be using a detailed rubric for this project.

They will be reading  <Letters> “Greetings from the WPA” and using context clues to develop a meaning for most of the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing “Pictionary” and the “Sentence Game” to review each of the words.  The students will also be working on a writing prompt based on the following: “Do you think that teens should be expected to pitch in by getting jobs or doing chores or volunteer work? Why or why not?” They will be brainstorming their ideas with their groups and developing a rough draft in class; they will be editing and revising their work in class as well. Lastly, they will be sharing their essays with the class, and we will be discussing some changes that have been made with reading logs.
