Week of October 29th-November 2nd

Reminders:

1). All Saints Day Mass will take place on Thursday, November 1st, at 10:00 a.m.

2). Bake Sale- Thursday, November 1st.

3). Friday, November 2nd, is a full day of school; there is no school mass today since we went together for All Saints Day. 

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be working in their Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book focusing on how to identify main ideas and key details and to use the main ideas and key details to summarize a text.  The students will also begin working on their Trimester One book report projects; they will be creating an Apple i-Phone and developing six applications that focus on the book’s characters, setting, plot, and vocabulary words. The students will be given a detailed rubric that must be used as a guide throughout the creation of the project. Along with this, the students will be developing a rough draft of a summary of the book in class; as a class, we will discuss how to include only the most important aspects of the book in a summary. They will also be editing and revising their work in class as well. The students may type their final draft in class; however, they may only use their laptops, tablets, or i-Pads.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 29th-

1). Complete Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book pages  26-27: “A Portrait of Frida Kahlo” ; be sure to follow the “Close Reading Habits” on page 26 and on page 27 complete # 1 (the chart), and #3 (the short response) which can be answered on page 30.  

2). Make sure your non-fiction book is completed for tomorrow; we will begin discussing the Trimester One book report project!  (Be sure to have your reading logs with you for tomorrow to help you with your project!)

3). Get the “Unit 2: Vocabulary” quiz signed, and make corrections.

Tuesday, October 30th-

1). Complete Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book pages  28-29: “Cesar Chavez”; work on the multiple choice questions (#’s 1-3), #4 (chart on page 31), and the short response which can be written on page 31, too. 

Wednesday, October 31st-

No homework today; Happy Halloween!

Thursday, November 1st-

1). Be sure the rough draft of your book report summary is completed from today; edit and revise your work; use a different color pen to make corrections!

2). Make sure your reading log is completed from class today.

Grade 6- This week, the students will be working in their Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book focusing on the theme: “Links in the Food Chain”.  They will be practicing how to take a central idea and key details to summarize a text.  They will also learn how to summarize a text without introducing opinions or judgments. Next, the students will be working on their Trimester One book report project: “Character Comes to Life”. The students will be designing a life size model of their main character from their book; they will be including a description of their character, providing a symbolic item based on their character, vocabulary words located from the novel, and a summary of the book as well. The students will be working on their summary in class-editing and revising their work, too. They may type their final draft in class; however, they may only use their laptops, tablets, or i-Pads.

Monday, October 29th-

1). Complete Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book pages 14-15: from “Food Web”; be sure to complete the Closed Reading on page 14; don’t forget to use process of elimination and include two details in the short response question.      

2). Make sure your non-fiction book is completed for tomorrow; we will begin discussing the Trimester One book report project!

3). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. (Be sure to have your reading logs with you for tomorrow to help you with your project!)

4). Get the “Unit 2: Vocabulary” quiz signed, and make corrections.

Tuesday, October 30th-

1). Complete Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book pages 16-18: from “Spiders: In Pursuit of Prey”; don’t forget to use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions.  Use details in your summary, too!

They will be identifying the central ideas in an informational text and the important details that support these ideas.  The students will also be summarizing an informational text by restating in one’s own words the central ideas and important details.  They will also be providing an objective summary free of personal opinions or judgments.  Next, the students will begin their Trimester One book report projects.  They will be designing a Pinterest page in which each “pin”  they develop reflects their book in a creative way. The students must transform their main characters, setting, plot, etc. into “pins”. Along with this, the students will be writing a summary of their book, focusing solely on the main events; they will be developing their rough draft in class and editing and revising their work. The students may type their final draft in class; however, they may only use their laptops, tablets, or i-Pads. 

Religion- This week, the students will continue working on their saint project; they will be developing a biography based on their saint; the students will be using a rubric to guide them throughout this project. 

*We do not have class with Father Marc on Monday, October 29th; please bring in your research/any pictures you need for your project for Monday!

1). Complete Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book pages 14-15: from “Kudzu: From Pretty Vine to Invasive Pest”; be sure to complete the Closed Reading on page 14; don’t forget to use process of elimination and include three specific details in the summary on page 15.  

2). Make sure your non-fiction book is completed for tomorrow; we will begin discussing the Trimester One book report project! (Be sure to have your reading logs with you for tomorrow to help you with your project!)

3). Make corrections to your essay “school lunches” IF you needed to. I will be collecting it tomorrow. Get your essays signed. 

Tuesday, October 30th-

1). Complete Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book pages 16-18: from “Python Invasion”; don’t forget to use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions.  For the short response, include two details from the article to support your answer.

The students must transform their main characters, setting, plot, etc. into “pins”. Along with this, the students will be writing a summary of their book, focusing solely on the main events; they will be developing their rough draft in class and editing and revising their work. The students may type their final draft in class; however, they may only use their laptops, tablets, or i-Pads.
