Week of October 15th-October 19th

Reminders:

1). The last day for the TerraNova exam will be on Monday, October 15th.  Make-up exams will be taking place up until Friday, October 19th.

2). Book report projects for Trimester One will begin on Monday, October 29th; the students have an extra two weeks to finish their non-fiction book.  Remember, if you are done with your non-fiction book, you may begin reading a book of your choice. 

 

Grade 5– This week, the students will finish focusing on main ideas and key details in their Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts books. Next, they will be identifying Unit 2 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. The students will be receiving a vocabulary handout; for each word, the students will be developing their own definitions, providing a synonym, antonym, the part(s) of speech, and creating an illustration.  The students will also be identifying conjunctions, independent/dependent clauses, coordinating conjunctions, and subordinating conjunctions. They will be engaging in various writing activities throughout the week to become better familiar with the topics.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 15th- 1). Complete pages 14, 15, and 17: “How Pluto Stopped Being a Planet” in the Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book; remember to read the questions first; then, read the passage; use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions; fill in the chart like we did together last week. The short response answer is just placing what you have in your chart in paragraph form; complete it the same way I showed you on Friday. ( We started 18-23, but DO NOT finish for homework; we will continue this tomorrow.)

Tuesday, October 16th- 1). Make sure you have finished page 23: from “When Stars Explode” in in the Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book; remember for question #5, they are telling you to focus solely on paragraphs 6 through 8! 2). Complete a written reading log. 

Wednesday, October 17th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 1-6. 2). Review the handout on conjunctions/coordinating conjunctions. Write a sentence using each of the coordinating conjunctions that we identified today: and, but, or, and so. 

Thursday, October 18th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 7-12. 2). Write six complex sentences- three with the subordinating conjunction in the beginning of the sentence, and three with the subordinating conjunction in the middle of the sentence; highlight or circle the subordinating conjunctions in each sentence. 

Make sure your written reading log is completed from today.

Grade 6– This week, the students will finish focusing on determining a central idea of a text in their Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts books. Next, they will be identifying Unit 2 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. The students will be receiving a vocabulary handout; for each word, the students will be developing their own definitions, providing a synonym, antonym, the part(s) of speech, and creating an illustration.  The students will also be identifying pronouns: subject, object, possessive, and reflexive and intensive. They will be engaging in various writing activities throughout the week to become better familiar with the various types of pronouns.  The students will also be writing -“Picture Prompt Pronoun” stories with a partner; they must include at least two of each type of pronoun in their stories.

Monday, October 15th- 1). Complete pages 8-10: from “Against All Odds: Earth’s Fragile Pioneers” in the Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book; remember to read the questions first; then, read the passage; use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions; use details in your essay!

Tuesday, October 16th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 1-5. 2). Complete pages 241-242: “Subject and Object Pronouns” in the Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book; follow the directions carefully! 3). Make corrections from pages 9 and 10 in the Ready New York CCLS book; be sure to explain your new choice!

Wednesday, October 17th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 6-10 (Please write 8-10 on the back of the packet). 2). Complete pages 243-244: “More About Subject and Object Pronouns” and 245-246: “Possessive Pronouns” in the Ready New York CCLS book; follow the directions carefully! 3). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required.

Thursday, October 18th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 11-15. 2). Make sure your written reading log is completed from today. 3). Complete pages 247-248 “Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns” in the Ready New York CCLS book; follow the directions carefully!

Grade 7– This week, the students will be identifying Unit 2 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. They will be receiving a vocabulary handout; for each word, the students will be developing their own definitions, providing a synonym, antonym, the part(s) of speech, and creating an illustration.  The students will also be identifying compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences; they will be engaging in various writing activities throughout the week to become better familiar with these topics. 

Religion This week, the students will finish discussing Chapter 2:- they will be identifying deposit of faith and Magisterium; they will also be reading about St. Jerome and working on a chapter review. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 15th- 1). Complete Ready New York CCLS pages 8-10: “Martha Graham: Modern Dance Innovator”; when it comes to the written response- be sure to include all bullet points in your essay. 

Tuesday, October 16th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 1-5. 2). Write nine compound sentences- three using a fanboy, three using a semicolon, and three using a semicolon, adverbial conjunction, and a comma. Follow the handout from today to guide you with your sentences. Make sure that your sentences are detailed!

Wednesday, October 17th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 6-10. 2). Make sure the questions/activities are completed in Religion-pages 26 and 27; we will be going over everything tomorrow! 3). Review how to write compound sentences (all three ways)! 4). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required.

Thursday, October 18th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary charts for Unit 2 words #’s 11-15. 2). Make sure your written reading log is completed from today. 3). Write ten complex sentences; five with the subordinating conjunction in the beginning of the sentence and five with the subordinating conjunction in the middle of the sentence; highlight the subordinating conjunction in each sentence.

Grade 8– This week, the students will be identifying Unit 2 vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. They will be receiving a vocabulary handout; for each word, the students will be developing their own definitions, providing a synonym, antonym, the part(s) of speech, and creating an illustration.  The students will also be identifying active and passive voice.  In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action.  In passive voice, the subject receives the action expressed by the verb.  The students will be engaging in various writing activities throughout the week to become better familiar with this topic. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

**Make sure pages 6 and 7:  from “New York City, 1869” in the Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book are completed for Monday.**

Monday, October 15th- 1). Complete Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 8-10: “A Brief History of Chapel Hill”; be sure to read the questions first; then, go back and highlight as you read; use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions. For the short response question, be sure to add TWO details from the account to support your answer. 

Tuesday, October 16th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 1-5. 2). Review the “Active and Passive Voice” handout; write five sentences using active voice and five sentences using passive voice. 3). Make corrections from pages 7-10 (if needed) in the Ready New York CCLS book; be sure to explain your new choices! For the written responses, make sure you added details if you needed to!

Wednesday, October 17th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 6-10. 2). Create an “Active and Passive Voice” quiz- ten questions-provide directions and an answer sheet  3). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 

Thursday, October 18th- 1). Make sure you have completed the vocabulary handout for Unit 2 words #’s 11-15. 2). Make sure your written reading log is completed from today.
