Week of May 6th-May 10th

Reminders:

1). The 7th Grade Mass will be taking place on Sunday, May 5th.

2). Our Seis de Mayo lunch is on Monday, May 6th; if you have not done so, please bring in flour tortillas.

3). There is a $2.00 Dress Down Day on Tuesday, May 7th. 

4). Grades 5-8 will be going over to the church on Wednesday, May 8th,  at 1:35 p.m., to practice singing for the May Crowning (May 14th). 

5). Friday, May 10th is Spirit Day!

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be introduced to prepositions; they will become familiar with identifying prepositions, prepositional phrases, and the object of a preposition. They will be writing sentences with prepositions as well. The students will be memorizing the “Yankee Doodle Preposition Song” to become familiar with common prepositions. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, May 6th- 1). Study the “Yankee Doodle Preposition Song”; write ten sentences using prepositions; as we did in class: A). Circle the preposition. B). Underline the prepositional phrase. C). Place a box around the object of a preposition.

Tuesday, May 7th- 1). Write ten sentences using prepositions about school. A). Circle the preposition. B). Underline the prepositional phrase. C). Place a box around the object of a preposition. 2). Study the “Yankee Doodle Preposition Song”.

Wednesday, May 8th- 1). Make sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 2). Study the “Yankee Doodle Preposition Song”.

Thursday, May 9th-1). Study for your Prepositions exam for either tomorrow or Monday; if Spirit Day is canceled, the exam will be tomorrow! 2). Make sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

Upcoming Exam: Prepositions- Monday, May 13th (*If Spirit Day is canceled, the exam will be on Friday, May 10th.)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be presenting their “Video Game Book Report” projects. Next, they will be introduced to punctuating parenthetical elements-using commas, dashes, and parenthesis in writing. They will also be taking a quiz on this topic. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, May 6th- 1). Complete a written reading log.

Tuesday, May 7th- 1). Review Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 255-256. 2). Write a total of ten sentences that incorporate one of the three types of parenthetical elements. Use the Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 255-256 as a guide. 

Wednesday, May 8th- 1). Make sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 2). Quiz tomorrow on punctuating parenthetical elements. (Review the handout that you completed in class; the quiz will be similar to that!)

Thursday, May 9th-1). Make sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

Grade 7- This week, the students will be finishing and presenting their “Movie Poster Book Report Projects” to the class. Next, they will be identifying misplaced and dangling modifiers; they will be watching videos about each topic and rewriting sentences to fix the modifiers. The students will be taking an exam on this topic next week.

Religion- This week, the students will begin focusing on Chapter 7: “The Promise of Salvation”. We will be discussing who or what helps us during difficult times and listing ways friendship helps us during hard times.  The students will also be discussing how God reaches out to help humankind and how He offers His people the hope of salvation. Lastly, we will be reading how in the Book of Genesis, there were terrible effects of Original Sin on humankind-especially when it came to Cain and Abel. (Religion lessons had to be moved to this week because of the Mathematics State Exam.)

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, May 6th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). You will be presenting your movie poster tomorrow; be sure your poster is completed. 

Tuesday, May 7th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 

Wednesday, May 8th- 1). Review the handout on “Misplaced Modifiers”. 2). Make sure the homework on the back of the handout is completed. 3). Religion questions based on pages 78-79 are finished from class. 

Thursday, May 9th- 1). Make sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 2). Review Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers. There will be an exam on this topic on Monday!

Upcoming Exam: Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers-Monday, May 13th

 

Grade 8-This week, the students will be presenting their “Superhero/Villain Book Report Projects”.  Next, they will be introduced to the verbal-infinitives; the students will become familiar with identifying and writing sentences using infinitives; infinitives in a sentence can be used as nouns: direct objects, predicate nominative, and the subject of a sentence. They can also be used as an adjective and adverb as a sentence; specific rules will be shown for each type of function to be able to write sentences using them and to be able to identify each type. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

  • A final review sheet will be given out this week!

Monday, May 6th- 1). Be sure your “Superhero or Villain Book Report Project” is completed for today; you will be presenting them to the class. 2). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 

Tuesday, May 7th- 1). Write three sentences using infinitives as a direct object, three sentences using infinitives as a predicate nominative, and three sentences using infinitives as a subject. 

Wednesday, May 8th- 1). Write three sentences using infinitives as adjectives, write three sentences using infinitives as adverbs modifying verbs, and three sentences using adverbs modifying adjectives- follow the handout!. 2). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 

Thursday, May 9th- 1). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 2). Review each type of infinitive; you will have an exam on Monday on this topic.
