Week of March 25th-March 29th

Reminders:

1).The 7th Grade’s Free Pennies for Patients Dress Down is on Friday, March 29th.

2). The 4th, 6th, and 7th Grade NYS ELA Exam will be taking place on Tuesday, April 2nd, and Wednesday, April 3rd.

3). The make-up day for the NYS ELA Exam is on Thursday, April 4th.

4). There will be a Bake Sale on Thursday, April 4th.

5). There will be a Cross Palms Sale at 2:00 P.M. on April 4th- a memo will be sent home about this sale. 

6). Trimester Two Awards Ceremony will take place after the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Friday, April 5th.

7). There is a 12:00 P.M. Dismissal on Friday, April 5th. 

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be playing “Basketball Jeopardy” to review Unit 4 spelling/ vocabulary words; they will be taking an exam on this unit as well.  For the remainder of the week, the students will be reviewing how to place a comma after: “yes” and “no”, tag questions, and to indicate direct address.  They will be working on various activities in class to practice placing commas correctly. Lastly, they will be developing creative stories/plays based on a picture prompt with proper comma usage. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule: 

*15 Unit 4 Jeopardy questions are due on Monday, March 25th! We are playing “Basketball Jeopardy” today!

Monday, March 25th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam is tomorrow; study!

Tuesday, March 26th- 1). Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam is today.  2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 

Wednesday, March 27th- 1). Write three of EACH of the following: “yes” or “no”, tag questions, and direct address.  (Total of nine) Make sure your sentences are 5th grade sentences! 2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 2). Get Unit 4 Spelling/ Vocabulary Exam signed and corrected. 

Thursday, March 28th-1). Complete Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 468-469: “More Uses for Commas”. These pages focus on “tag questions” and “direct address”.  2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

Upcoming Exams:

1). Unit 4 Vocabulary (Spelling/Vocabulary) Tuesday, March 26th (“Basketball Jeopardy”- Monday, March 25th)

2). Comma Usage Exam-Thursday, April 4th (This exam is tentative since Grades 6 and 7 will be taking the NYS ELA Exam this week; classes may not meet due to the state testing.)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will continue practicing for the NYS ELA Exam. We will continue focusing on figurative, connotative, and technical meanings, and then begin to focus on text structures, author’s purpose, author’s point of view, tone, mood, structure of a poem/story, evaluating an argument, and comparing and contrasting texts. (Topics and homework are tentative for the week.)

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, March 25th- 1). Complete Unit 4 Vocabulary take home exam. 2). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 

Tuesday, March 26th- 1). Complete Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 108-110: “Dead Sea Scrolls”. Be sure pages 106-107 are completed: “Secrets in the Stones”. 

Wednesday, March 27th- 1). Complete Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 113-115: “Worth the Risk” and “Just for the Thrill of It”. 

Thursday, March 28th- *There is no written homework tonight; the students worked very hard on practice questions for the state exam.* I am proud of their efforts! =)

Upcoming Exams: 

1).  Unit 4 Vocabulary Take Home Exam- this is due on Tuesday, March 26th.

2). NYS ELA Exam-Tuesday, April 2nd and Wednesday, April 3rd- Be sure to eat a good breakfast! Be sure to bring in snack, too. You must have at least two number two pencils sharpened!

 

Grade 7- This week, the students will continue practicing for the NYS ELA Exam. We will continue focusing on analyzing text structure. Next, we will be identifying figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.  The students will also be focusing on point of view, repetition, alliteration, rhyme, stanzas, free verse, and rhyme scheme. Lastly, they will be evaluating an argument and comparing and contrasting texts. (Topics and homework are tentative for the week.)

Religion- The students will also continue working with their buddies on their Lent, Triduum, and Easter children’s book. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, March 25th- 1). Complete Unit 4 Vocabulary Take Home Exam. 2). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 

Tuesday, March 26th- 1). Complete Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 108-110: from “A Dire Shortage of Water”; don’t forget to include an introduction, body, and conclusion for your essay!

Wednesday, March 27th- 1). Be sure Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts pages 124-125 are completed: from “At Loafing-Holt”. 

Thursday, March 28th- *There is no written homework tonight; the students worked very hard on practice questions for the state exam.* I am proud of their efforts! =) IF you needed to finish the essay-please make sure this is completed  for tomorrow!

Grade 8- This week, the students will be playing “Basketball Jeopardy” to review Unit 4 vocabulary words; they will be taking an exam on this unit as well.  For the remainder of the week, the students will be identifying the verbal- “Participles- Present and Past”. They will be learning how to identify the two different types and how to write sentences with each of them. They will also be developing creative stories using past and present participles as well. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule: 

Due Monday: 

1). March 25th-20 Unit 4 Jeopardy questions

 2). Unit 4 Writing-“Literature and the Remedying of Social Ills” Essay

Monday, March 25th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam is tomorrow; study!

Tuesday, March 26th- 1). Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam is today.  2). Complete a written reading log. 

Wednesday, March 27th- 1). Write five sentences using present participles and five sentences using past participles; highlight or underline the participles in each sentence. Remember, that this type of verbal functions only as an ADJECTIVE in the sentence. 2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR. 3). Get Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam signed, and make corrections. 

Thursday, March 28th- There is no written homework tonight.
