Week of March 18th-March 22nd

Reminders:

1). Report Cards will be sent home on Monday, March 18th. Please sign, and return on Tuesday, March 19th. 

2). 12:00 p.m. dismissal will take place on Tuesday, March 19th.  Report Card Conferences today-unless a parent requested a meeting, this conference is not mandatory. 

3). Merit and Honor Award Ceremony for Trimester Two will be announced at a later date. 

 

Grade 5– This week, the students will be introduced to Unit 4 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. They will be reading diary entries titled “Wagon Train Diary” and using context clues to develop meanings of each of the words. They will then be identifying each word’s part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and definitions. Next, they will be illustrating each word and writing sentences with the words.  They will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game as well; the students will also be working in groups and engaging in a writing activity-developing a short story or play using the words; they will be presenting their story or play to the class.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, March 18th- 1). Finish your sentences and illustrations from class based on Unit 4; tomorrow we will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game! 2). Get your Reading Comprehension Quiz signed, and make corrections. 

Tuesday, March 19th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 40-41: “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

Wednesday, March 20th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 42-43: “Completing the Sentence” and “Word Associations”. 2). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

Thursday, March 21st- 1). Write each of your vocabulary words 3 x each. 2). Make sure your final draft of your writing (story or play using ALL Unit 4 words) is completed for tomorrow! 3). Be sure your reading log is completed from SSR.

*15 Jeopardy questions are due on Monday, March 25th*

Upcoming Exam: Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam- Tuesday, March 26th (Jeopardy, Monday, March 25th)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be identifying Unit 4 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. Their homework for the week will be based around these vocabulary words.  Along with that, they will continue working in their Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book in order to practice for the New York State ELA Exam.  They will be focusing on various strategies that will include: theme, summary, personal opinion, and making judgments. They will be working on various passages based on these topics-focusing specifically on multiple choice questions and short and extended responses. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, March 18th- 1). Write vocabulary words 1-10 3 x each; write a sentence with each word as well; be detailed! 2). Be sure your essay from class is completed! We will be sharing them tomorrow!

Tuesday, March 19th- 1). Write vocabulary words 11-20 3 x each; write a sentence with each word as well; be detailed! 2). Be sure Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS pages 70-73 are completed. 

Wednesday, March 20th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 55-top of 57: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 2). Finish pages 74-76 in the Ready NY CCLS English Language Arts book-“Vivian’s Move”. 3). We will be taking a practice Session 1 Exam for the NYS Exam; bring in snack!

Thursday, March 21st- 1).Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 57-top of 59: “Completing the Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”; do not complete “Words in Action”. 2). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 3). Make corrections in the Ready NY CCLS English Language Arts book if you need to (“Vivian’s Move”). 

Upcoming Exam: Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam- A take home exam will be sent home the following week; this is because we will be focusing heavily on the New York State Exam during ELA class.

 

Grade 7 – This week, the students will be identifying Unit 5 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. Their homework for the week will be based around these vocabulary words.  Along with that, they will continue working in their Ready New York English Language Arts CCLS book in order to practice for the New York State ELA Exam.  They will be focusing on summary and objective for the week, and taking a practice exam in class; please note that from now until the NYS ELA State Exam, SSR time will consist of an extra ELA State Practice class. 

*Grade 7 will no longer be having their extra math class each Tuesday and Wednesday; they will now be having extra ELA classes during their SSR period-each Wednesday and Thursday.  The students will once again have religion class in their regular time slot-1:35 p.m.-2:20 p.m. After the Easter break, the students will once again be having extra math classes.*

Religion- During religion class, the students will continue working with their buddies on their Lent, Triduum, and Easter children’s book. They will begin putting their final books together this week.

Monday, March 18th- 1). Write vocabulary words 1-10 3 x each; write a sentence with each word as well; be detailed! 2). Get “Country Cousin/City Cousin” Reading Comprehension Quiz signed, and make corrections; please explain why you are choosing your new answer!

Tuesday, March 19th- 1). Write vocabulary words 11-20 3 x each; write a sentence with each word as well; be detailed! 2). If you did not do so, please bring in your report card signed for tomorrow; I will be giving you another copy. The signed one is the school’s copy. 

Wednesday, March 20th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 65-top of 67: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 2). Make sure pages 77-84 are completed in the Ready NY CCLS English Language Arts book. 3). We will be taking a practice Session 1 Exam for the NYS Exam; bring in snack!

Due to taking the NYS ELA Practice Exam, there was no social studies class today; however, you must do the following for homework:

Read “Paine’s Common Sense” and “Independence is Declared”-pages 118-120.  Then, answer the questions on Mrs. Giacalone’s website.
