Week of March, 16th, 2020

ATTENTION STUDENTS: VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION!  PLEASE CHECK YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNTS FOR AN EMAIL TO JOIN MY SOCIAL STUDIES/RELIGION GOOGLE CLASSROOM!

Steps for logging in to Google Classroom:

  1. To login to Google Classroom go to www.google.com
  2. Click the circle with an initial or sign in in the top right-hand corner of the page. 
  3. Type in username and password. Be sure to spell everything correctly. 
  4. Click the 9 small squares at the top right-hand corner of the page to open all google apps. 
  5. Click Classroom.
  • The stream tab is where you will see all updates and posts. I ask that students do not post messages on the stream unless specified. 
  • The classwork tab is where you will see all assignments. Click on an assignment for more details. 
  • The grades tab is where grades processed by google classroom can be viewed. All grades will be posted on OptionC. 
  • Uploading assignments may require creating a document rather than posting a response as a comment. I will specify if that is the case. 
  • I may also ask that a picture is uploaded in an assignment as proof of written paper homework. 

5th Grade

     Below is the work for the week; you must send completed classwork via email each day by 6:00 P.M. Homework assignments will be due the following day via email by 9:00 A.M. We will begin using Google Classroom for all assignments; please review the above, and check your school email account.

     This week the students will continue their study of the Plymouth Colony.  They will be discussing why the English colonists came to settle in this colony.  They will be identifying the origins of representative government in the United States, and they will be analyzing the impact religion had on the Plymouth settlement.  Lastly, the class will be exploring the relationship between the American Indians and the Plymouth colonists.

Monday, March 16th

Classwork: Journal Topic: Longitude and Latitude: The students worked on this assignment in class on Friday with a partner, however they must finish it on their own today.  Make sure that your story has at least 8 coordinates and that you used vocabulary from the worksheet on longitude and latitude. This assignment will be graded as a Journal Topic.

This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

Homework: Vocabulary on page 166- Use context clues to create meanings. Create a riddle for each of the vocabulary words.

This assignment must be emailed to me by 9:00 AM tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 17th

Classwork: Read “The Mayflower Compact” on page 166-168, then answer the questions below. You do not have to rewrite the question but you must restate it.

  1. What were the three factors that made more people settle in North America?
  2. Captain John Smith’s book describe the landscape of what present-day states?
  3. The Separatist broke away from the ______________________________.
  4. The Separatists were able to practice there religion freely in Holland, why did they decided to leave and settle in North America?
  5. How many settlers were on the Mayflower?
  6. The Pilgrims were supposed to land in ___________________ but a storm blew them off course and the ended up in what is now ___________________.
  7. Why did the Pilgrims have to create the Mayflower Compact?
  8. What is the difference between self-rule and majority rule?

Homework: Journal Topic: Imagine that you were a Pilgrim who just landed in Massachusetts. Write a diary entry describing what your journey was like aboard the Mayflower and how you feel knowing that you did not land in Virginia. You must also talk about why the Pilgrims on board they Mayflower agreed to create the Mayflower Compact.  You can use the textbook as well as the internet to help you with this assignment.  Please make sure that you put the writing in your own words.  This assignment will be graded as a Journal Topic and it must be emailed to me by 9:00 AM tomorrow.

Wednesday, March 18th

Classwork: Read and pick out important facts for “Plymouth Colony” on pages 168-169.

This assignment must be emailed to be by 6:00 PM.

Homework: Use the facts from “Plymouth Colony” to answer the questions below.

  1. Describe what the first winter was like for the Plymouth colonists.
  2. Who were Samoset and Tisquantum? How did they help the Plymouth colonists?
  3. Why did the relationship with the Wampanoag Indians change?
  4. What do you think the colonist’s could have done to keep a peaceful relationship with the Wampanoag Indians? Explain your answer.

Thursday, March 19th

Classwork: Read “Plymouth Colony Prospers” on pages 169-170. Write a summary explaining what helped the Plymouth colonist prosper. Make sure that your summary is in paragraph form. Please don’t copy word for word from the book put it in your own words!

This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

Friday, March 20th

Classwork: Lesson 5 Review- page 170 #s 1-7.  Take your time answering these questions because i will be grading this assignment as a quiz.  You do not have to write the questions but you do have to restate them in your answers.

6th Grade

   Below is the work for the week; you must send completed classwork via email each day by 6:00 P.M. Homework assignments will be due the following day via email by 9:00 A.M. We will begin using Google Classroom for all assignments; please review the above, and check your school email account.

  This week the students will complete their study of ancient Egypt.  They will be focusing on the Kingdoms of Kush and Nubia and how they were influenced by Egyptian culture.  They will also be analyzing how and why the Kingdom of Kush prospered.

   The students will also being their study of ancient Chinese civilizations.  They will become familiar with the geography of China- focusing on how the rivers, mountains, and deserts shaped the development of China’s civilization.  The class will also be examining the Shang and Zhou dynasties.

Monday, March 16th

Classwork: Read and outline “The Kushite Kingdom”(“The Rise of Kush” and “Kush Conquers Egypt”) on pages 130-131.

This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

Homework: Use your outline to answer the questions below.

  1. Why did the kingdom of Kush prosper?
  2. Why do you think the Kushites continued to admire the ancient Egyptians even after conquering them? Explain your answer.

Classwork: Read and outline “The Kushite Kingdom” (“Using Iron” and “The Capital of Meroë”) on pages 132-133.

This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

Homework: Use your outline to answer the questions below.

  1. Why did the Kushites want to learn how to make iron from the Assyrians?
  2. How was the city of Meroë like and unlike an Egyptian city? Be descriptive and give examples.
  3. How did the use of iron affect Kush?

Wednesday, March 18th

Classwork: Lesson 4 Review- page 133 #s 1-5.  Take your time with this assignment because I will be grading this as a quiz.  Make sure that you go back to your outlines and the textbook to find facts and details!

This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

Homework: Create five higher order thinking questions (What do you think?, how might things have been different if?) and answers for the section “The Kingdom of Kush”.  These questions and answers will be added to the lesson review and count as part of the quiz grade.  You may use your textbook as well as the internet to help you.

Thursday, March 19th

Classwork: Chapter 5 Activities- pages 134 #s 1 and 3. Chapter 5 Assessment page 135 #s 1-6.

This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

Homework: Chapter 5 Assessment page 136 #s 7-11. 

Take your time with today’s classwork and homework because I will be combining them and counting them as a test grade.  Make sure that you use plenty of details and facts in your answers!

Classwork: `Introducing the Chapter: Early China- Read “The Story Matters” on pages 275, then answer the questions below.

  1. Why do you think the early Chinese were receptive to the ideas of Confucius?
  2. Why do you think Confucius emphasized respect for education?
  3. What do you think Confucius meant by saying that people should fulfill their duties towards their parents?

Introducing Place and Time: Early China 1750B.C to A.D. 220- pages 276-277. Use the map and the time line to answer questions 1-4 on page 276.

    7th Grade

      Below is the work for the week; you must send completed classwork via email each day by 6:00 P.M. Homework assignments will be due the following day via email by 9:00 A.M. We will begin using Google Classroom for all assignments; please review the above, and check your school email account.

      This week the students will continue discussing the events that led up to the American Revolution.   They will be analyzing how the British efforts to raise taxes on the colonies sparked major protest in the colonies.  They will be discussing in detail the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and how Britain responded to colonial actions by passing the Intolerable Acts.

     The students will also be discussing the start of the American Revolution.  They will be analyzing the importance of the First Continental Congress and Second Continental Congress.  The students will also be discussing the impact of the “Shot Heard Around the World”.  Lastly, the class will be examining the early battles of the revolution.

    Monday, March 16th: 

    Classwork: As per our class discussion, the group will be using FaceTime to continue working collaboratively to create a skit about the conflicts that were going on in the English colonies after the Parliament placed taxes on certain items. Use pages 98-103 as well as the internet to help you gather information.  Remember to use the  detailed rubric to guide you through this assignment.  Please email me what the group completed today by 6:00 PM.

    Homework: Section 5 Assessment- page 103 #s 1-4- is due tomorrow by 9:00 AM.

    8th Grade

      Below is the work for the week; you must send completed classwork via email each day by 6:00 P.M. Homework assignments will be due the following day via email by 9:00 A.M. We will begin using Google Classroom for all assignments; please review the above, and check your school email account.

     The students will be focusing on how Progressives worked to reform the workplace.  They will be discussing how reformers attempted to improve conditions for child laborers.  They will also be analyzing the steps that unions and reformers took to improve safety in the workplace and how they fought to limit working hours.

    Monday, March 16th:

    Classwork: Progressive Newspaper Article: Imagine that you are a Progressive journalist in the early 1900s.  You have witnessed some of the suffragist’s rallies that were taking place during this time.  You must write a front-page article for your local newspaper describing what you have seen.  Please follow the rubric that was handed out on Friday.  This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

    Homework: Read and Outline: “Africans Challenged Discrimination” on pages 677-678. Make sure that you answer the Reading Check question on page 678. This assignment must be emailed to me by 9:00 AM tomorrow.

    Tuesday, March 17th:

    Classwork: Interview Questions: You must create three higher order interview questions with answers for both W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. You can use the textbook as a guide BUT must use other resources to get information of both of these reformers. This assignment must be emailed to me by 6:00 PM.

    Homework: Read “Failures of Reform” on page 679, then answer the questions below.

    1. Why did many Native Americans resist adopting white culture?
    2. What caused Chinese immigrants to form their own communities?
    3. What are some possible ways American life would have been affected progressive reforms had helped migrant farm workers?
    4. What were the limitations of progressive reforms?
