Week of January 6, 2020

Reminders: 

1). School resumes on Monday, January 6th. 5-8 will attend mass.

Grade 5- This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words from the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacios; they will be writing sentences using each word and reading pages 1-44; they will be reading various chapters with the class and independently during SSR.  The students will be introduced to the main character, August Pullman, his family, and his new school; they will be answering various comprehension questions throughout the reading.  

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule: 

Monday, January 6th- 1). Finish sentences using the vocabulary words from Wonder; remember your sentences must be detailed; highlight or underline the word in each sentence.

Tuesday, January 7th- 1). Wonder-pages 3-18 must be completed; answer questions- #’s 1-8 on the handout.  

Wednesday, January 8th- 1). Wonder-pages 19-30 must be completed; answer questions #’s 1-4 on the handout.  

Thursday, January 9th- 1). Wonder-pages 31-36 must be completed; summarizes these pages; remember to only include important information. NO OPINIONS in a summary! 2). Quiz tomorrow on the vocabulary words! You will be reading some of Wonder as well and answering questions. The vocabulary will be a matching column. 

Upcoming Quiz- Friday, January 10th- The students will be reading certain pages in Wonder and answering comprehension questions; please study the vocabulary words, too!

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words (Chapters 1-10) from the novel Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo. They will be writing sentences with a partner using each word.  Next, the students will be reading and responding to Chapters 1-8-with the class and independently.  They will be introduced to the Burpo family and begin reading about the adversities they face.

*You should have purchased the novel by now; if you have not, you must get it this week; for the time being, you will be responsible to make copies of the chapters we read.*

Monday, January 6th- 1). Finish sentences using the vocabulary words from Heaven is for Real; remember your sentences must be detailed; highlight or underline the word in each sentence. 2). Finish reading the Prologue and Chapter 1 from SSR-summarize both. 

Tuesday, January 7th- 1). Heaven is for Real-Chapters 2-4 must be completed; create three short answer questions and answers for Chapters 2 and 3. 2). Finish reading Chapter 4 from SSR-summarize. 

Wednesday, January 8th- 1). Heaven is for Real-Chapters 5-6 must be completed; give Chapter 5 a new title, and summarize it. 2). Finish reading Chapter 6 from SSR-create two short answer questions with answers. 

Thursday, January 9th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 7: Heaven is for Real; answer the following questions: 

1). Describe Colton in this chapter; give two details to support your answer.

2). How would you feel if you were Todd or Sonja at this moment? Explain.

3). Why do you think Todd discusses the time Colton came into the world? Explain. 

4). Make a prediction for Chapter 8.

Grade 7- This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words from Chapters 1-4: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. They will be reading and responding to the chapters as a class and independently; they will become familiar with the main character Ponyboy Curtis, his family and friends- especially his best friend Johnny. In depth, the students will be discussing  the difference between the two gangs-the greasers and the Socs.

Religion- This week, the students will begin focusing on Chapter 3: “The Blessed Trinity”; they will be discussing “ingredients” that make up a good friendship; they will also be reading and outlining: “God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-The Blessed Trinity” and “God Calls Us to Share His Love With the World”.

Tuesday, January 7th- 1). Review the vocabulary words from Chapter 2. 2).  Finish reading Chapter 2, and answer the short answer questions on the handout.

Wednesday, January 8th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 3: The Outsiders, and answer the short answer questions on the handout.

Thursday, January 9th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 4: The Outsiders; answer the comprehension questions. 

Upcoming Quiz- Friday, January 10th- The students will be reading certain pages from The Outsiders and answering comprehension questions; please study the vocabulary words, too!

 

Grade 8-This week, the students will be introduced to vocabulary words (Chapters 1-6) from the novel: We Beat the Street by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt. They will be writing sentences using each word and reading the novel as a class and independently; the students will become familiar with the three main characters and developing a character chart-discussing each of their traits. They will begin to read about the young boys’ lives and the moment they each realized they wanted to be doctors. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule: 

*You should have purchased the novel by now; if you have not, you must get it this week; for the time being, you will be responsible to make copies of the chapters we read.*

Monday, January 6th- 1). Finish sentences using the vocabulary words from We Beat the Street: (Chapters 1-6); remember your sentences must be detailed; highlight or underline the word in each sentence; write a prediction for this novel-use at least four of the vocabulary words in your prediction. 

Tuesday, January 7th- 1). Be sure Chapters 1-2 are completed from We Beat the Street; answer the following questions:

1). Based on this first section, what is your impression of Newark and the projects? Be detailed.

2). Describe Sampson’s experience at the hospital.  What do you learn about him based on his reactions? Give two details to support your answer.

3). How well does the principal at Rameck’s school seem to understand him? What feelings does she bring out in Rameck? Be detailed! 

Wednesday, January 8th- 1).Make sure you have given Chapter 3 a new title and summarized! After reading Chapter 4 in SSR, answer the following questions that are based on CHAPTERS 3 and 4.

1). Describe George’s attitude toward school; give two details to support your answer.

2). What positive messages does George’s third-grade teacher convey to her students? Be detailed. 

3). Discuss Sampson and his friends’ attitudes when they set out to steal the Icees. 

Thursday, January 9th- 1). Finish the character chart based on Sampson, George, and Rameck; make sure it is detailed!
