Week of January 14th-January 18th

Reminders:

1). Box Top Dress Down-Tuesday, January 15th

2). LNO $2 Dress Down-Thursday, January 17th

3). School will be closed on Friday, January 18th, for a Professional Development meeting.

4). School is closed on Monday, January 21st, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

 

Grade 5-  This week, the students will finish reading the novel, Holes. They will be illustrating, summarizing, and developing a comic strip based on certain chapters. Lastly, they will be writing a book review of the novel-which will include not only their likes, dislikes, and suggestions but details from the book as well.

Tentative Homework/ Testing Schedule:

*Please have a book of choice in class by next Tuesday, January 22nd.*

Monday, January 14th- 1). Be sure your illustrations and summaries are completed from class today based on Chapters 35 and 36.  2). Read Chapters 37-39, and create three higher order thinking questions with answers. 3). Get your quiz based on Chapters 31 and 32: Holes signed and corrected. 

Tuesday, January 15th- 1). Read Chapters 42 and 43; give each chapter a title and summarize the chapters. 

Wednesday, January 16th 1). Be sure your comic strip is completed based on Chapters 44 and 45. 2). Read Chapters 46, 47, and 48. Give a title for each chapter, and explain why you chose those titles. (Two-three sentences for each is more than enough!)

Thursday, January 17th– 1). Finish your book review; this will be due on Tuesday, January 22nd. Remember to include your likes and/or dislikes of the book; include text evidence, too! Give it a rating out of five stars as well.

Upcoming ExamHoles-Essay Exam- Thursday, January 24th- You will be asked a question about the book and answer it in essay form. We will review during the week; you may use your novel and vocabulary handouts. 

 

Grade 6-  This week, the students will finish reading the novel, Heaven is for Real.  They will be summarizing and illustrating the rest of the chapters.  The students will be taking an essay exam on the novel and watching the movie as well. 

Tentative Homework/ Testing Schedule:

*Please have a book of choice in class by next Tuesday, January 22nd. 

Monday, January 14th- 1). Give a new title for Chapter 26; summarize, too. 2). Get your quiz on Chapters 22 and 23 signed, and make corrections. 

Tuesday, January 15th- 1). Create a comic strip based on Chapter 27; read the Epilogue, too. 2). Essay exam tomorrow on the book; you may use the novel and your vocabulary handouts. 

Wednesday, January 16th 1). Write a book review; include your likes, dislikes, and changes you would make to the book if you could; be sure to include details from the novel to support your review. Give it a rating out of five stars. This must be typed. 2). Tomorrow we will be watching the movie; bring in snacks! =)

Grade 7- This week, the students will continue working on their corkboard collage project based on The Outsiders. They will also be working in their Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book.  The students will be focusing on the theme: Inventors and Inventions and analyzing interactions in a text.  They will be identifying relationships between individuals, events, and ideas in informational text.  They will also analyze how interactions between individuals, events and ideas influence other events and ideas.

Religion- This week, the students will begin focusing on Chapter 5; “Jesus Christ, the Good News”. They will be discussing what the good news means to them.  They will be working in groups and turning negative headlines into positive ones.  They will be discussing Incarnation and creating a news report telling of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Lastly, they will be focusing on the four synoptic Gospels.

Monday, January 14th- 1).  Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 22-23: “Race to Reach the South Pole: Scott vs. Amundsen”; read the questions on page 23 FIRST-underline/circle important parts of the questions; then complete the “Close Reading” on page 22.  Next, read the passage; use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions; don’t forget to give two details from the text to support your answer. 

Tuesday, January 15th- 1). Complete Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 24-26: from “The President’s Speech to Students”; be sure to read the questions first-underline/circle important parts of each question, go back, and read the excerpt, and use process of elimination for each question.  For the “Short Response” be sure to answer the question first; then support your answer with two text based details. 

Wednesday, January 16th 1). Religion– read, highlight, and outline pages 54-55- “We meet God in his Son, Jesus Christ” and “We meet Jesus in the four Gospels” ;you do not have to complete the activity. 

Thursday, January 17th– 1). There is no written homework today!

Upcoming Exam– Reading Comprehension Exam-Thursday, January 24th. 

 

Grade 8- This week, the students will finish reading We Beat the Street; they will be discussing how even though the men faced numerous obstacles in their lives, they overcome all of them and pursued their dreams.  They will be responding to the chapters by summarizing and answering and creating higher order thinking questions.

Monday, January 14th- 1). Get your quiz-Chapter 15 signed, and make corrections; be sure Chapter 17 is completed; answer the following:

1). What lesson do you think Rameck learned in Chapter 17? Explain.

2). Would you have reacted the same way Rameck did in this chapter? Yes or no? Explain.

3). The mother of the young man that Rameck assaulted decided to give Rameck a second chance.  What does this say about her character? Explain.  Would you have done the same as her? Explain.

4). Describe the similarity between Rameck and George’s words based on page 144; give details to support your answer. 

Tuesday, January 15th- 1). Read Chapter 19; summarize; remember to include specific details, and do not include your opinion. 

Wednesday, January 16th 1). Be sure Chapters 20 and 21 have been completed from class today. Give a new title for each chapter; explain why you chose those titles. 

Thursday, January 17th– 1). There is no written homework today!
