Week of February 10th, 2020

Reminders:

Grade 5- This week, the students will be identifying a new set of vocabulary words form Wonder-Parts 5-8.  They will be creating illustrations and sentences with a partner for each word. The students will also continue reading the novel-engaging in various writing activities after reading certain chapters.  They will be reading from the perspectives of Justin (Via’s boyfriend), August, and Miranda.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 10th- 1. Finish the illustrations and sentences from class today-based on vocabulary words from Parts 5-8: Wonder. 

Tuesday, February 11th- 1. Make sure pages 187-204 (SSR included) are completed from Wonder.  Pretend you are Justin; based on what you have read, write a diary entry from Justin’s experiences in these chapters.  Be detailed, and write in sequential order; remember you DO NOT have to include every single detail-only parts that are significant. 

Wednesday, February 12th- 1. Make sure pages 206-234 (SSR included) are completed from Wonder.  Which chapter is your favorite? Choose ONE, and summarize it; we will review tomorrow!

Thursday, February 13th- 1. Make sure pages 236-248 from Wonder are completed. What was the most interesting part that you read? Explain. What part would you change? Explain. You should have a paragraph for each question. Be detailed!

Upcoming Exam: Thursday, February 27th-Wonder-Vocabulary from Parts 5-8/Reading Comprehension questions. (Students will read certain pages and answer questions.) 

*We will be finishing the novel after the break. =)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be taking an essay exam on Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo.  They will be watching the movie in class as well.  Next, the students will be working in their Ready NY CCLS English Language Arts books; they will be discussing punctuating parenthetical elements-focusing on when to use parenthesis, a comma, or a dash to separate non-essential information within text.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

*Now that we have completed Heaven is for Real, you must get a book of choice for SSR. This book must be in by Wednesday, February 12th. 

*Book review (Heaven is for Real) from Friday is due on Monday, February 10th. 

Monday, February 10th- 1. Essay Exam today on Heaven is for Real; you may use the novel and vocabulary handouts. 2). You must have a book for Wednesday; do not forget! 3). Bring in a snack tomorrow; we will be watching the movie-Heaven is for Real. There is no written homework for today. 

Tuesday, February 11th- 1. Complete two reading logs; I will be collecting them tomorrow. 

Wednesday, February 12th- 1. Complete the handout on punctuating parenthetical elements; use Ready NY book pages 255-256 to help you. Your quiz on Friday will be similar to this handout. 2. Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 3. Get Heaven is for Real Essay Exam signed, and make corrections; if you received a 95 or above, you do not need to make corrections.

Grade 7- This week, the students will be identifying compound-complex sentences.  They will be practicing how to write these specific sentences and sharing them with the class;  the students will also be engaging in a collaborative project based on The Outsiders: Corkboard Collage Project; following a detailed rubric, they will be choosing one character to focus on; from that character’s perspective, they must come up with ten items that are significant to that character; they will be receiving cork boards, so that they may place their items on them; they must pretend that this corkboard will be hung up in their character’s home. 

Religion- This week, the students will begin to focus on Chapter 5: “Jesus Christ: The Good News”.  They will be discussing what the good news means to them and focusing on the Incarnation and Jesus and the Four Gospels.

*Now that we have completed The Outsiders, you must get a book of choice for SSR. This book must be in by Tuesday, February 11th.

Grade 8-This week, the students will be identifying Verb Moods.  They will be focusing on each type of verb mood: indicative, imperative, interrogative, conditional, and subjunctive.  They will be engaging in various writing activities to gain a better understanding of each verb mood. The students will also be developing a creative story with a partner/group-including three of every verb mood; they will be labeling the verb moods within the story. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

*Now that we have completed We Beat the Street, you must get a book of choice for SSR. This book must be in by Tuesday, February 11th.

Monday, February 10th- 1. Make sure your sentences are completed from class-three of EACH type of verb mood; be sure to label the sentences: A) Indicative B) Imperative C) Interrogative D) Conditional E) Subjunctive (Be sure to review them every day; exam on this topic will be on Friday.) 2. Finish the handout based on verb moods. 

Tuesday, February 11th- 1. Read for 20 minutes.  2. Review each type of verb mood; test on Friday!

Wednesday, February 12th- 1. Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2. Study for Verb Moods test for Friday!
