Week of December 10th-December 14th

Reminders:

1). The 7th grade will be attending Confession on Wednesday, December 12th.

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 8 – 18 in the book, Holes. They will be reading and discussing the Wreck Room at Camp Green Lake, how Stanley wishes the boys in the camp could face his bully, Derrick Dunne, and how Mr. Pendanski encourages the boys.  The students will pretend to be Stanley and write a letter to Stanley’s mom. They will also be introduced to the character, Zero and the mystery behind the item with the initials “KB” on it.  The students will be working on various comprehension questions throughout the reading as well. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, December 10th- 1). Summarize Chapters 8 and 9, and answer the following:

1). Describe the Wreck Room.  Why do you think it is called the Wreck Room? If you could make some changes to the room, what changes would you make, and why?

2). Why do you think Stanley’s letter to his mom mentioned all things that were not happening at Camp Green Lake? Explain. 

Tuesday, December 11th- 1). Come up with five comprehension questions and answers based on Chapters 10 and 11. Remember to not create literal questions! Your questions should make others THINK! 

Wednesday, December 12th- 1). Neatly write or type Stanley’s letter from class today; be creative and detailed! 2). Complete the vocabulary handout- remember to use context clues to develop meanings. 

Thursday, December 13th- 1). Answer the following questions from today’s reading (Chapters 12 and 13):

A). On page 57, what positive message does Mr. Pendanski tell the boys? Do you agree with his words of wisdom? Explain.

B). Why do you think Zero never smiles? Explain.

C). In Chapter 13, what does int mean that Stanley “moved up one place in line”? Explain. 

2). Read Chapters 14 and 15; summarize the chapters; remember to not add your opinion, and only include important details.

Upcoming Quiz: The students will be taking a reading comprehension quiz on Monday, December 17th; they will be given chapters to read in Holes and answer reading comprehension questions. (Students may use their vocabulary handouts/Holes book for the quiz.)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 7-13 in Heaven is for Real. They will be reading and discussing Colton’s pain, Todd’s emotions, and Colton’s eyewitness accounts in Heaven. The students will be illustrating and describing all of Colton’s accounts; they will be sharing their visuals with the class. They will also be summarizing and answering various comprehension questions throughout the reading.  

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, December 10th- 1). Be sure Chapters 7 and 8 are completed from Heaven is for Real. Answer the following:

1). Why does Sonja lose hope in Chapter 7? Would you have felt the same? Explain.

2). Why does Sonja say to Todd, “I think this is it?” How do you think Todd felt when he heard those words? Explain.

3). Do you think the title: “Raging at God” was a good one for Chapter 8? Give two details to support your answer.  Create a new title, and explain it. 

Tuesday, December 11th- 1). Be sure Chapters 9 and 10 are completed from Heaven is for Real. Give each chapter a new title, draw an illustration for each chapter, and explain the illustrations and how they are significant to the chapters.

Wednesday, December 12th- 1). Read Chapter 11: “Colton Burpo Collection Agent”; create three higher order thinking questions; remember these questions must make others think! 2). Draw illustrations to represent the vocabulary words from Chapters 11-14.

Thursday, December 13th- 1). Draw all the accounts Colton witnesses in Heaven; label them as well; color the pictures! Be neat!

Upcoming Quiz: The students will be taking a reading comprehension quiz on Monday, December 17th; they will be given chapters to read in Heaven is for Real and answer reading comprehension questions. (The students may use the novel and vocabulary handout for the quiz.)

 

Grade 7- This week, the students will be reviewing vocabulary words from Chapters 7-12 from The Outsiders.  They will be sharing their riddles, illustrations, sentences, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be reading and responding to Chapters 7-10.  The students will also be creating a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the Socs from the beginning of the book and in Chapter 7 based on Ponyboy’s perspective.  They will discussing Johnny’s decline, Dally’s thoughts on fighting the Socs, and how a major tragedy affects the greasers.  The students will be summarizing parts and creating and answering various comprehension questions. 

Religion- The students will be receiving a handout based on Advent/ Christmas on Monday; they are to use their religion books for this assignment. It will be counted as a test grade; the students will have ample time to complete it; it will be due on Monday, December 17th. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, December 10th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 7; answer the following:

1). Describe how Ponyboy was feeling in the beginning of Chapter 7.  Give two details to support your answer. Would you have felt the same as he did? Explain.

2). Compare Johnny and Dally’s injuries.  How do you think their injuries are affecting the greasers? Explain.

3). How do you think Ponyboy felt now that he is back home? Give two details to support your answer. 

4). Why do you think Ponyboy had a nightmare of his parents funeral? What do you think triggered this dream? Explain.

5). Describe Randy and Ponyboy’s conversation. How would you describe Randy based on their conversation? Do you feel he is a changed Soc? Explain.

Tuesday, December 11th- 1). Be sure the Venn diagram from class is completed; neatly write or type the written part of the information from the diagram.

Wednesday, December 12th- 1).Finish Chapter 8; create five higher order thinking questions. Answer the questions; make sure they are detailed!

Thursday, December 13th- 1). Draw three illustrations in sequential order to explain Chapter 9; describe each illustration using details. 

Upcoming Quiz: The students will be taking a reading comprehension quiz on Wednesday, December 20th; they will be given chapters to read in The Outsiders and answer reading comprehension questions. (The students may use the novel and vocabulary handout for the quiz.)

 

Grade 8- This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words from Chapters 7-12 from We Beat the Street.  They will be creating illustrations and riddles for each word.  They will be reading and responding to Chapters 7-10, discussing lessons learned by Sampson, Rameck’s choice to keep his old friends despite negative consequences, and how the three boys become close. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, December 10th- 1). Finish the illustrations and riddles based on the vocabulary words from Chapters 7-12. 

Tuesday, December 11th- 1). Based on the title for Chapter 7: “Yeah, Man. They Say the Driver’s Dead”, write a prediction; use at least two vocabulary words. 

Wednesday, December 12th- 1). Finish the questions from Chapter 7. 2). Read Chapter 8; we will discuss it tomorrow! 3). Get We Beat the Street exam signed, and make corrections. 

Thursday, December 13th- 1). Turn Chapter 9 into a news article; give it a title; pretend this happened yesterday; type or neatly write it, and include at least three vocabulary words in the article.
