Week of October 2nd-October 6th

Reminders: 

1). 7th and 8th grade will be meeting with a Xaverian High School representative on Monday, October 2nd at 1:15 p.m.

2). Cheesecake Sale begins on Monday, October 2nd.

3). Vision Screening will take place on Monday, October 2nd. 

4). Paul Effman first session of band will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd.

5). Box Top Day-Tuesday, October 3rd. 

6). We have a 12:00 p.m. Dismissal on Friday, October 6th, for a Faculty Meeting. Bake Sale today, too!

 

Grade 5– This week, the students will be playing “Basketball Jeopardy” (Monday, October 2nd) to review the biography-“Leonardo’s Horse” by Jean Fritz which focuses on the life of Leonardo da Vinci.  They will be taking an exam on this biography on Tuesday.  As a post-reading activity, the students will be working with a partner to create a newspaper cover that focuses on events from the story.  Their newspapers must include a creative title, illustration, and two articles based on what we have read from the story.  A rubric will be given to follow as well.  

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 2nd– 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Study for “Leonardo’s Horse” Exam- be sure to review the vocabulary and comprehension questions. 

Tuesday, October 3rd– 1). Make sure your reading log is completed from today! 

Wednesday, October 4th– 1). Complete Reading Comprehension Worksheet- “Preventing Skin Damage”; complete the “Bonus”, too.  2). Make sure your reading log is completed from class today. 3). Get “Leonardo’s Horse” Exam signed, and make corrections. 

Thursday, October 5th-  1). Complete Reading Comprehension Worksheet- “Don’t Become Another Sad Statistic”; complete the “Bonus”, too.  2). Make sure your reading log is completed from class today.

Thursday, October 5th–  1). Complete Reading Comprehension Worksheets- “Forests of Clouds and Mist” and “Kids Take to the Airwaves”- (These focus on visualization skills.) 2). Make sure your reading log is completed from class today.

Grade 7– This week, the students will be taking an essay exam based on the story “Two Kinds”- from the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.  They will be able to use their literature book to cite evidence in their writing as well as their vocabulary handout.  Next, as a post-reading activity, the students will be creating a Movie DVD based on the story.  They must creatively come up with a movie title, illustration, and suspenseful plot summary that is based off of the story.  The students will be given a rubric to follow throughout this project as well. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 2nd- 1). Complete a written reading log tonight. 2). Essay Exam on “Two Kinds” tomorrow. Be sure to have your vocabulary handout; you may use a dictionary and/or thesaurus as well as your literature book. 

Tuesday, October 3rd- 1). Religion– make sure page 28 is completed: “Time Capsule” and read and list five facts about St. Jerome. Be sure to answer the question in the box about St. Jerome as well. 2). Read for 20 minutes no written reading log is required. 

Wednesday, October 4th- 1). Complete Reading Comprehension Worksheet- “The Unwritten Laws”. 2). Make sure your reading log is completed from class today.  3). Open Book Religion Exam on Chapter 2: “The Truth Revealed” will be tomorrow! 3). Get “Two Kinds” Essay Exam signed-make corrections if you needed to!

Thursday, October 5th-  1). Complete Reading Comprehension Worksheet- “The Wright Brothers”-this will be collected. 2). Make sure your reading log is completed from class today.

Religion– This week, the students will continue to focus on Chapter 2: “The Truth Revealed”; they will be pretending to put together a time capsule and list items that would go inside to show future generations how to find truth in their lives.  They will also be reading and writing facts about St. Jerome.  With a partner, they will be working on the chapter review- multiple choice, short answer responses, and essay question. Lastly, they will be taking an open book exam on the chapter on Thursday, October 5th.
