Week of October 16th-October 20th

                                        ELA 5-8/7 Religion

Reminders: 

*We will begin an in class book report project beginning Wednesday, October 25th; the project must reflect the nonfiction novel that was read when we began our school year.  If you are not already completed the novel, please be sure you are completed with it by next week!* 

 

Grade 5–  (Due to the TerraNova Exam, we were not able to work on our Unit 2 Vocabulary lesson, so we will this week.) The students will be working on Unit 2 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. They will be reading a Historical Nonfiction passage: “Sybil Ludington’s Ride” and using context clues to develop a meaning for the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  We will be reviewing “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence”, and “Word Associations”. Lastly, the students will work with a group to write a creative story based on a picture prompt.   They will be sharing their stories with their classmates. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

*Nonfiction novels must be completed by Wednesday, October 25th! 

Monday, October 16th- No written homework tonight; please read for 20 minutes. 

Tuesday, October 17th- Be sure illustrations and sentences are completed from class today based on Unit 2 words. We will be playing the Sentence Game and Pictionary tomorrow!

Wednesday, October 18th- Make sure Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 20-23 (“Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence”, and “Word Associations” are completed.

Thursday, October 19th- 1). Create 15 Jeopardy questions based on Unit 2 words; we will be playing Jeopardy on Monday! Unit 2 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam will be on Tuesday. Jeopardy questions are due on Monday!

Tuesday, October 24th-Spelling/Vocabulary Unit 2 (Jeopardy on Monday, October 23rd)

 

Grade 6–  (Due to the TerraNova Exam, we were not able to work on our Unit 2 Vocabulary lesson, so we will this week.) The students will also be working on Unit 2 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book. They will be reading an <Interview> titled “West End School Has Comestible Curriculum” and using context clues to develop a meaning for the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  We will be reviewing “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence”, and “Vocabulary in Context”. Lastly, they will be working on an essay in class that focuses on healthy dieting. The essay must include at least three words from Unit 2. (This writing prompt is modeled on that of standardized tests.)

They will be reading a <Letter to the Editor> titled “In Poor Taste” and using context clues to develop a meaning for the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  We will be reviewing “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence”, and “Vocabulary in Context”. Lastly, they will be working on a persuasive essay in which they pretend to be on a student committee to improve school lunches served in the school cafeteria. The essay must include at least three words from Unit 2. (This writing prompt is modeled on that of standardized tests.)

Religion– This week, we will be focusing on Chapter 3: “The Blessed Trinity”. We will be discussing what relationships mean to each of us and coming up with elements that make up a good friendship or family relationship.  They will be developing a skit that conveys-“What message about relationships would you like to tell others?” Next, we will be reading and discussing God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-The Blessed Trinity; the students will then work in groups to develop a poster encouraging people around the world to live in the unity and love that God desires for us.

They will be reading an <Expository Essay> titled “Instant Cash” and using context clues to develop a meaning for the vocabulary words.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  We will be reviewing “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence”, and “Vocabulary in Context”. Lastly, they will be working on an essay that focuses on if they agree or disagree that communication skills are declining due to social media and by interacting with machines. The essay must include at least three words from Unit 2. (This writing prompt is modeled on that of standardized tests.)
