Week of November 27th-December 1st

Reminders:

1). Trimester One will end on Friday, December 1st.

2). There will be no after school on Friday, December 1st.

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 3 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. They will be reading a magazine article: “The Flight of the Monarch” and using context clues to develop a meaning for each vocabulary word.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  The students will be playing the Sentence Game and Pictionary as a review. They will also be playing an interactive vocabulary game on the smartboard. Lastly, they will be working in groups and creating a short story or play using all of the words and sharing their work with the class.

Monday, November 27th-  1). Be sure illustrations and sentences from class are completed.    2). Read for 20 minutes today; no written reading log is required. 3). Get “Conjunctions” Exam signed, and make corrections. 

Tuesday, November 28th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop pages 30-31: “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 2). Read for 20 minutes today; no written reading log is required.

Wednesday, November 29th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop page 32: “Completing the Sentence”. 2). *Read for 20 minutes; you do not have to complete the two written reading logs.*

Thursday, November 30th- 1). Read for 20 minutes no written reading log is required. 

Upcoming Exam: Tuesday, December 5th-Unit 3 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam (Jeopardy will be on Monday, December 4th.)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 3 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books.  They will be reading an <Archived Newspaper Article>: “This Day in 1923: The Olympic’s the Thing”; the students will read most of the words in context and do their best to develop meanings for each word.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  The students will also be independently working on “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Right Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Next, they will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each word and will also be playing an interactive vocabulary game on the smartboard. They will also be working on a writing prompt that is modeled on that of standardized exams which focuses on a quote from Euripides, a Greek tragedian (writer of tragedies) of classical Athens . They will be sharing their essays with the class.

Tuesday, November 28th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop pages 37-top of 39: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 

Wednesday, November 29th- Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop pages 39-41: “Completing the Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Do not complete “Writing: Words in Action”. *Read for 20 minutes; you do not have to complete the two written reading logs.*

Thursday, November 30th- 1). Finish rough draft of “Writing: Words in Action” from today; you must hand in your rough draft and the final draft. (Editing/revising must be shown on the rough draft; use a different color pen.)

*You will be creating Jeopardy questions in class on Friday, December 1st; they are due on Monday, December 4th.*

Grade 7– This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 3 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. The students will read a <Diary Enrtry>: “Lunch at Delmonico’s” and read most of the vocabulary words in context to develop meanings.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. The students will independently work on “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Right Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Next, they will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each word. They will also be playing an interactive vocabulary game on the smartboard. Lastly, they will also be working on a writing prompt that is modeled on that of standardized exams. This opinion prompt focuses on the following: Is it helpful to learn about the past from a specific person’s personal experiences? They will be sharing their essays with the class. 

Religion– The students will be using their “We Live Our Faith” books and reading/highlighting about Advent and Christmas; they will be working in groups to develop a children’s book using this information; their story must be accompanied by various illustrations.  They will be following a rubric throughout this project.

The students will read a <Press Release>: “Grand Columbian Carnivall Unites the World” and read most of the vocabulary words in context to develop meanings.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. The students will independently work on “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Right Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Next, they will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each word. They will also be playing an interactive vocabulary game on the smartboard. Lastly, they will also be working on a writing prompt; based on the reading: “Grand Colombian Carnival Unites the World”, the students will write a persuasive brochure enticing visitors to attend the event (exposition).  They will be sharing their essays with the class.

Monday, November 27th- *Please have two written reading logs completed by Thursday, November 30th; both will be graded.* 1). Be sure illustrations and sentences from class are completed.   2). Read for 20 minutes today; no written reading log is required. 3). Get “Gerunds/Participles” Exam signed, and make corrections.
