5th Grade

This week the students will be working on a research project on the Explorers of the 1400s and 1500s. The students will be working independently to create ten interview questions with answers based on the research they compiled on their explorer.  

Project: “Explorers of the 1400s and 1500s” research is due on Monday, November 13th.  This project will be done in class with the exception of finding research and typing the final draft of the Interview.  The students were given a detailed rubric in class to follow. 

11/13: All interview questions and answers are due typed on Thursday.

  Test signed and  corrected.

  You should have completed  at least three interview questions and answers.

11/14: Work on typing the interview questions and answers that you created in class today.  You should be printing out pictures and maps to decorate your project.  (These materials will be due on Thursday.)

You should have completed  at least seven interview questions and answers.

11/15:  All ten questions and answers are due typed tomorrow! You will be creating the cover and inside cover of your project tomorrow, so make sure that you have the materials you need.

11/16 and 11/17: The class will be finishing their projects. Everyone will be presenting on Monday!

11/17: Current Events Assignment- Each student must get two current event articles; one national article and one international article. The articles must discuss politics/government, economics, health, environmental issues, or religious issues. These articles are due read and highlight by Monday. The students must also pick out at least three vocabulary words to define for each article. In class on Monday, the students will be answering questions based on their articles.

6th Grade

 This week the students will be continuing their study of Ancient Mesopotamia.  They will be working with partners to finish creating their Mesopotamian city-state dioramas. They will also be analyzing how the Mesopotamian empires greatly influenced other civilizations. They will be exploring Hammurabi’s Code and its effects on the development of later civilizations.  Lastly, they will be discussing why Babylon was such an important city in the ancient world.  

11/13: Test- tomorrow! Go over the notes that you took on the worksheet packet- “Ancient Civilizations”.  

11/14: The class will be taking an open note book test on the worksheet packet- “Ancient Civilizations”.

Homework- Read- “Epic of Gilgamesh” on pages 84-85.  Then answer the Literature Questions on page 85.

11/15: Test signed and corrected.

11/16: Create riddles for the vocabulary words on pages 86-93.  Make sure that your illustrations are completed because the class will be playing Pick the Pic and the Riddle Game tomorrow.

7th Grade

  This week the students will begin their study of New Spain.  They will be examining how the Spanish Conquistadors conquered the Aztec and Inca Empires.  They will also be analyzing how the Spanish settlers treated the Native Americans and the effect the harsh treatment had on their population.

11/14: Read: “Exploring the Borderlands of New Spain” on pages 48-50.  Then answer the questions below. 

  1. What was Juan Ponce de Leon searching for in Florida?
  2. In what ways did Juan Ponce de Leon succeed and fail in the Americas?
  3. Why do you think Spain granted de Soto permission to explore such a large area of North America?
  4. What areas did Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and his expedition explore?
  5. What hardships did de Vaca and his men encounter on their expedition?

STUDY! Jeopardy- Friday and Test- Monday: “Spain Builds and Empire” on pages 46-51.  20 Jeopardy questions are due on Friday.

11/16: Finish the Section Assessment on page 51 (#4).

The articles must discuss politics/government, economics, health, environmental issues, or religious issues. This assignment is due completed on Tuesday; everyone will be presenting. Make sure that you can locate the state of your national article and the country/continent of your international article on the map!

11/20: The class will be taking a test on- “Spain Builds an Empire”.

8th Grade

  The students will continue their study of the Second Industrial Revolution.  They will be discussing the impact that the Bessemer Process had on America. They will also be analyzing the important inventions of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, and the Wright Brothers and the impact these inventions had on America in the late 1800s.  Lastly, the class will be discussing that the growth of big business in the late 1800s led to the creation of monopolies. 

11/14: STUDY! Jeopardy- Friday and Test- Monday-“The Second Industrial Revolution” and “Big Business” on pages 614-622.  20 Jeopardy questions are due on Friday.

Journal Topic: Write an editorial supporting the Child Labor Committee. State why you feel a law must be passed to help save the children working in factories and mines. Use examples of what the children are doing and the conditions they work under. This assignment must be typed and illustrated. I will be collecting and grading this assignment.

11/16: Finish the Section on page 622 #s 1-3.
