Week of May 7th-May 11th

Reminders: 

1. The “Scholastic Book Fair” will be taking place on Monday, May 7th, and Tuesday, May 8th.

       2. The summer uniform can be worn starting Monday, May 7th. 

     3. Progress Reports will be distributed on Monday, May 7th.

     4. Progress Reports must be returned on Wednesday, May 8th.

     5. Ascension Thursday is on May 10th.

     6. Spirit Day will be taking place on Friday, May 11th; please be sure to wear sunblock!!

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will finish completing the The Newest Dinosaur Discovery” Project based on the biography: “The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins”; using their graphic organizers and rubric as a guide, the students will finish creating or designing their dinosaur, explaining if their dinosaur is a herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore, and discussing what continent/country their dinosaur was found. They will also be discussing what makes their dinosaur unique! The students will also be presenting their “Newest Dinosaur Discovery” to the class. Also, throughout the week, the students’ homework will be focusing on Unit 7 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop words.  We will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and reading the words within context. 

Tentative Homework Schedule:

Monday, May 7th- 1). Write sentences using each of the vocabulary words from Unit 7. Make sure the sentences are detailed; highlight the word within each sentence, too. 

Tuesday, May 8th 1).  1).Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 72-73: “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms” and “Antonyms”.

Wednesday, May 9th- 1). Read pages 68-69-biography- “Eugenie Clark: Swimming with Sharks” in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book; create a ten question and answer interview between yourself and Eugenie.  Based on what you have read about her, what are ten questions you would ask? How do you think she would respond? Incorporate at least five of the vocabulary words in your writing.  

Thursday, May 10th 1).Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 74-75: “Completing the Sentence” and “Word Associations”.

Upcoming Exam: Tuesday, May 15th- Spelling/Vocabulary Unit 7 (We will be playing Jeopardy on Monday, May 14th.)

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will finish completing their “Canadian Newscast” Project based on the realistic fiction story- “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen.  The students will be using their graphic organizers and rubrics to help them complete their final draft of the project. They will be focusing on three main events based on the story, and conducting research to work on their sports, cooking, and weather segment. They will be presenting their newscasts to their classmates as well.  Also, throughout the week, the students’ homework will be focusing on Unit 7 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop words.  We will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and reading the words within context.

Tuesday, May 8th 1). Complete pages 93-top of 95 in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book.  This includes: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms” and “Antonyms”; remember, to look up the words in boldface (synonyms and antonyms) if they cannot be found in the section.  

Wednesday, May 9th- 1).Complete pages 95-97 in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book.  This includes: “Completing the Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”; do not complete the “Writing: Words in Action” writing prompt. 

Thursday, May 10th 1).Complete the first writing prompt on page 96- “Writing: Words in Action”- you must go back and read pages 88-89 in order to complete this task. You should have at least two paragraphs when writing your persuasive television commercial advertisement! Be creative, and use at least three Unit 7 words.

Grade 7- This week, the students will be completing their “Anti-Bullying Magazine” Project” based on the science fiction story-“All Summer In A Day”.  The students will be using their graphic organizers and rubrics to help them complete their final draft of the project. They will finish developing a creative magazine title, illustration, three articles focusing on the events in the story, an article on bullying and how it affects others, and a list of ten reasons why it is important to be loving, respectful, and accepting person to others. Lastly, they will be incorporating the setting of the story creatively- as a game, quiz, etc. in their magazine; this project will be presented to the class this week.   Also, throughout the week, the students’ homework will be focusing on Unit 7 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop words.  We will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and reading the words within context. 

Religion- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapter 9: “The Coming of God’s Kingdom”- we will be discussing how we can make a difference in others’ lives. We will discuss how Jesus prepares for his work as God’s son and how Jesus ushers in God’s Kingdom.

Monday, May 7th- 1). Write sentences using each of the vocabulary words from Unit 7. Make sure the sentences are detailed; highlight the word within each sentence, too. 2). Get “Chapter 8” Religion Exam signed/corrected and “All Summer In A Day” Comprehension questions!

Tuesday, May 8th 1). Complete pages 93-top of 95 in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book.  This includes: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms” and “Antonyms”; remember, to look up the words in boldface (synonyms and antonyms) if they cannot be found in the section.  2). Be sure to type anything you need for your “Anti-Bullying Magazine Project”.

Wednesday, May 9th- 1).Complete pages 95-97 in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book.  This includes: “Completing the Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”; do not complete the “Writing: Words in Action” writing prompt. 

Thursday, May 10th 1).Write a creative story using at least ten of the vocabulary words; highlight the words used in context! This must be written neatly or typed!

Grade 8- This week, the students will finish completing their “Autobiography Project”  based on the folktale-“The Wise Old Woman”.  The students will be using their graphic organizers and rubrics to help them complete their final draft of the project which includes: creating a title, illustration, motto, and autobiography based on one of the character’s perspectives; this project will be presented to the class this week. Also, throughout the week, the students’ homework will be focusing on Unit 7 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop words.  We will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and reading the words within context.
