Week of March 5th-March 9th

Reminder:

1). Permission slips with the payment for our museum trip are due by Friday, March 9th.

* DUE TO THE IMPENDING WEATHER FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7TH, WE WILL BE HAVING A 12:00 P.M. DISMISSAL FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL OUR OLGCA FAMILIES AND FACULTY.  THERE WILL BE NO AFTER SCHOOL AS WELL.*

 

Grade 5-

This week, the students will be given a spelling list; we will review the words, and they will have a quiz on the words next week. Next, the students will be focusing on Chapters 29-37 in Holes by Louis Sachar; we will be focusing on how Mr. Pendanski treats Zero and how Stanley and Zero’s escape and what they are doing to survive; the students will be working on various short answer responses (reading comprehension questions).  They will be taking an exam on Chapters 31-32 in which they will be reading independently and answering comprehension questions.

*Make sure your riddles from Thursday, March 1st (Chapters 29-39 vocabulary) are completed by Monday, March 5th.*

Monday, March 5th– 1). Summarize Chapter 29, and create two short answer questions with answers; also, illustrate the chapter. 2). Write spelling words 3 X each and in alphabetical order.

Tuesday, March 6th– 1). Write a diary entry from Zero’s perspective based on what we read today in Chapter 30. Give details!

Wednesday, March 7th– 1). Complete a written reading log.

Thursday, March 8th– 1). Be sure Chapters 33-35 are completed; summarize the chapters; use vocabulary words!

Upcoming Quizzes– 1). Wednesday, March 7th-Holes-Chapters 31-32; this will be read in class.  2). Spelling Quiz-Tuesday, March 13th

 

Grade 6-

This week, the students will be given a spelling list; we will review the words, and they will have a quiz on the words next week. Next, the students will finish reading the novel: Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo; they will be using context clues to develop meanings for the vocabulary words from Chapters 20-23; we will then be coming up with class definitions. As we read, we will be discussing Colton’s opinion of being in Heaven and the first person you see when you go there.  We will also be introduced to Ali, the babysitter, the swords of angels, and the young girl who has visions which are exactly the same as what Colton witnesses. 

Monday, March 5th- 1). Write sentences with the vocabulary words from class today; they must be detailed. Highlight the word in each sentence.

Tuesday, March 6th– 1). Summarize Chapters 20-21; develop two questions based on these chapters that you would ask Colton if you could; write a response that you think he would give. Be creative!

Wednesday, March 7th- 1). Be sure Chapters 22-23 have been completed; summarize the chapters. 2). Write spelling words 3 X each and in alphabetical order.

Thursday, March 8th– 1). Write a diary entry from the perspective of Ali, Colton’s babysitter, based on what we have read today; this must be typed!

Upcoming Exam/Quiz– 1). Tuesday, March 13th- Heaven is for Real Essay; you will be able to use the novel and your vocabulary handouts for this essay. The question will be given the day of the exam.

Grade 7

This week, the students will be given a spelling list; we will review the words, and they will have a quiz on the words next week. Next, the students will be taking an exam on Chapters 7-12: The Outsiders.  As a post reading activity, the students will be working as a group to create a “Corkboard Collage” based on important quotes, characters, places, messages, symbols, etc. from the perspective of one of the characters from The Outsiders.  Along with this, there will be a writing piece in which all that goes on the board, will be explained as if the character is writing it himself/herself. A rubric will be given to follow. 

ReligionThis week, the students will be working in groups to develop dioramas based on the Stations of the Cross; each group will be given specific stations to focus on; they must be creative, neat, and a description with each of them. A rubric will be given to follow throughout this project.

Monday, March 5th– 1). Study the vocabulary from Chapters 7-12 for tomorrow; review any questions or summaries from classwork/homework. Test tomorrow! 2). Get your book review signed, and make corrections if needed. (Any grade 44/50 and below needs corrections.)

Tuesday, March 6th– 1). Write each spelling word 3 X each; write a sentence with each word as well; make sure they are detailed. 2). Bring in any supplies needed for the “Stations of the Cross” Diorama (Be sure to discuss with your group members the items you each will be bringing in to class for this project.) 3). The Outsiders essay that was typed in computer must be emailed to me if you were not able to print it. 

Wednesday, March 7th– 1). No homework!

Thursday, March 8th– 1). Complete a written reading log. If you do not have a novel right now, you may summarize a newspaper or magazine article; the article MUST be attached to your reading log.  2). Get The Outsiders Exam signed, and make corrections. 3). Get your permission slip signed to watch the movie-The Outsiders; you can bring in snack!

Grade 8

This week, the students will be given a spelling list; we will review the words, and they will have a quiz on the words next week. The will also be focusing on Chapters 17-21 from We Beat the Street; we will be discussing how Rameck realizes the importance of self-control and how the boys toy with the notion of becoming rap stars instead of doctors.  They will also be identifying vocabulary words for the rest of the novel.  Lastly, we will be discussing how Sampson overcame his struggles and finally reached his dream. (The students will be taking a quiz on Chapter 19 and 20.)

Monday, March 5th– 1). Make sure your summary based on Chapter 17 is completed; create two short answer questions with answers. 2). Write spelling words 3 X each and in alphabetical order.

Tuesday, March 6th– 1). Be sure to summarize the chapter, and answer the following questions based on Chapter 18:

1). Do you think the boys should have abandoned their pursuit for a rap career for less flashy but more stable medical careers? Explain.

2). Did the boys owe it to anyone to stick to their original plan? Explain.

3). If you had to change one thing about this chapter, what would it be? Explain.

 

Wednesday, March 7th– 1). No homework tonight.

Thursday, March 8th– 1). Be sure sentences and illustrations from class are completed-vocabulary from Chapters 21, 22, and the Conclusion. The sentences must be detailed.
