Week of March 19th-March 23rd

Reminders:

1).The Museum of Natural History Trip has been cancelled.  We have rescheduled for Monday, April 16th.

2). School will be closed Thursday, March 22, due to the snow storm. 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be finishing the novel- Holes; they will be watching the movie as well; next the students will be working in a group to create a news broadcast; they must write five news reports based on events from the novel; they must also creatively include sports, weather, etc. in their reports.  A rubric will be followed throughout this project

Monday, March 19th– 1). Write a book review of Holes; for the first paragraph you must BRIEFLY tell about the novel; the next paragraph should explain your likes and/or dislikes with specific examples from the novel; for the last paragraph, incorporate if you would recommend this book to a friend; explain this, too. This must be neatly written or typed! *We will be watching the movie, Holes, tomorrow! Bring in some snacks =).

Tuesday, March 20th- 1). Compare and contrast the movie and the novel- Holes; what were the differences and/or similarities. Be detailed!

Wednesday, March 21st– 1). No homework today.

Thursday, March 22nd– 1). No homework today.

 

Grade 6This week, the students will continue focusing on practicing for the ELA State Exam; we will be working in our Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book.  The students will be recognizing the difference between facts and opinions.  They will also be comparing and contrasting texts by different authors about the same topic or event and identifying how an author’s purpose for writing influences the focus of the text and the details presented.  The students will also be practicing how to answer an extended response question; we will be reviewing my hints/tips for this part as well. 

Monday, March 19th– 1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 188-192: “Born to Fly”, “”Earhart on Equality”,  from The Story of My Life and “A Remarkable Life”; be sure to complete the close reading, use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions, and be detailed with the short response; give two details from the text to support your answer. 

Tuesday, March 20th– 1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 193-196: “Stan Lee and Spider Man” and “The Birth of Spider-Man”. Be sure to include at least four details from the article in your short response answer.

Wednesday, March 21st– 1).No homework today.

Thursday, March 22nd 1). No homework today. 

 

Grade 7This week, the students will be presenting their “Corkboard Collage” based on important quotes, characters, places, symbols, etc. from the perspective of one of the characters from The Outsiders. Next, the students will be focusing on their Unit 6 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. We will be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be creating illustrations and writing a sentence using each word.  We will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review each of the words.  Lastly, the students will be taking a reading comprehension quiz on Friday. 

ReligionThis week, the students will continue working in groups to develop dioramas based on the Stations of the Cross; by now each group must have the materials needed to create the dioramas. They will be allowed to type their descriptions in the Computer Room or on their electronic devices.

Tuesday, March 20th– 1). Be sure your illustrations and sentences using Unit 6 Vocabulary words are completed; we will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game tomorrow!

Grade 8- This week, the students will continue working in their Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts books. First, they will be analyzing the structure of individual paragraphs in an informational text.  They will also be determining the function of particular sentences within a paragraph in developing a key concept about a topic in informational text. Next, the students will be determining an author’s point of view and purpose about a topic in informational text.  They will also cite evidence to explain how an author’s point of view is conveyed in text. 

*For those of you who were absent on Friday, March 16th, be sure to complete “Dust Bowl Migrants” pages 109-110.  This will be checked on Monday, March 19th. *

Tuesday, March 20th– 1).  1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 114-115: from Brown v. Board of Education; be sure to complete the close reading, use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions, and be detailed with the short response; give two details from the text to support your answer.
