Week of March 12th-March 16th

Reminders:

1). The 2nd Trimester ends on Thursday, March 15th.

2). The 3rd Trimester begins on Friday, March 16th.

3). There is a $1.00 Green Nut Day on Friday, March 16th.

4). There is a 12:00 P.M. Dismissal on Friday, March 16th. 

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be reading Chapters 38 and 39 in Holes and creating a cartoon strip based on the events they have read; next, they will be identifying vocabulary words from Chapters 40-50 and writing sentences with each of the words. We will be reaching the end of the novel as a class, and the students will be answering various comprehension questions, illustrating scenes, and summarizing various events. 

Monday, March 12th– 1). Be sure Chapters 38-39 in Holes are completed and finish your “cartoon strip”. Only include important events! 2). Spelling Quiz tomorrow-study!

Tuesday, March 13th– 1). Make sure your sentences and/or illustrations using vocabulary words from Chapters 40-50 from Holes are completed; the sentences must be detailed; highlight the vocabulary word in each sentence. 

Wednesday, March 14th– 1). Read Chapters 42-43 in Holes; complete a reading log based on these chapters!

Thursday, March 8th- 15). Be sure Chapters 44-46 from Holes are completed; answer the comprehension questions on the handout based on these chapters. Remember, for Chapter 46 you must create your own inferential or critical thinking question (with an answer).

Grade 6– This week, the students will be taking an essay exam on the novel Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo; they will also be watching the movie as a class.  For the next few weeks, the students will be focusing on practicing for the ELA State Exam; we will be working in our Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book.  The students will be understanding that words may have more layers of meaning beyond their literal meaning and will be analyzing context to determine a word’s figurative, connotative, or technical meaning.  Lastly, they will be analyzing how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text (examples-description, sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, or problem and solution) and contributes to the development of the text’s central idea.

Monday, March 12th– 1). Heaven is for Real Essay Exam tomorrow; you will be able to use your vocabulary handouts, novel, dictionary and/or thesaurus. 2). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 97-99: (The rest of “The Father of Rock and Roll”) and “The Evolution of the Guitar”; for 98-99, be sure to complete the close reading, use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions, and be detailed with the short response; give two details from the text to support your answer. 

Tuesday, March 13th- 1). Spelling Quiz tomorrow; study! 2). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 100-102: from “The Power of Music”; be sure to use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions.  With the short response, they are asking you to explain what “tonal quality” means; use context clues to determine the meaning and explain it in your own words. 

Wednesday, March 14th– 1). Complete a written reading log. 2). Get Essay Exam- Heaven is for Real signed, and make corrections (90 and below had to be completely re-written.)

Thursday, March 15th– 1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 106-107: “Secrets in the Stones”; be sure to complete the close reading, use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions, and be detailed with the short response; give two details from the text to support your answer. 2). Get your “Diary Entry”: Heaven is for Real signed, and make corrections- any grade below a 45/50. 

Upcoming Exam/Quiz- 1). Tuesday, March 13th- Heaven is for Real Essay; you will be able to use the novel and your vocabulary handouts for this essay. The question will be given the day of the exam. 2). Wednesday, March 14th-Spelling Quiz-

 

Grade 7– This week, the students will first be taking a spelling quiz; they will then continue working in groups to create a “Corkboard Collage” based on important quotes, characters, places, symbols, etc. from the perspective of one of the characters from The Outsiders.  Along with this, there will be a writing piece in which all that goes on the board, will be explained as if the character is writing it himself/herself. They will continue using their rubric throughout the project. The students will be working in their Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book independently for homework most of the week; we will be reviewing the work each day before working on the project. 

Religion– This week, the students will continue working in groups to develop dioramas based on the Stations of the Cross; by now each group must have the materials needed to create the dioramas. They will be allowed to type their descriptions in the Computer Room or on their electronic devices. 

Monday, March 12th– 1). Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts Assessments (thin book) pages 1-5 “Country Cousin/City Cousin”; be sure to read the questions first; highlight important parts in the question! Read the passage closely, highlight any important information in the story, and use process of elimination when answering the questions! 2). Get The Outsiders Essay signed; your revised copy is due by Friday. If you typed your essay in Computer class, you can work on it today; otherwise, please have it in by Friday. 

Tuesday, March 13th– 1). Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts Assessments (thin book) pages 6-9 “Hog Wild Over Video Games”; be sure to read the questions first; highlight important parts in the question! Read the passage closely, highlight any important information in the story, and use process of elimination when answering the questions!

Wednesday, March 14th– 1). Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts Assessments (thin book) pages 14-16 from  “Remarks on the 40th Anniversary of D-Day”; be sure to read the questions first; highlight important parts in the question! Read the passage closely, highlight any important information in the story, and use process of elimination when answering the questions! 2). Get your Spelling Quiz signed, and make corrections.

Thursday, March 15th– 1). Complete a written reading log. 2). Your revised copy of The Outsiders Essay-(Ponyboy’s Lessons) is due tomorrow.

Grade 8– This week, the students will be finishing the novel-We Beat the Street; they will be taking an Essay Exam on the novel as well; for the next few weeks, the students will be focusing on practicing for the ELA State Exam; we will be working in our Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book. They will be determining the figurative, connotative, and technical meanings of words and phrases as they are used in an informational text.  They will be analyzing the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone and also analyzing the impact of analogies or allusions to other texts on meaning and tone.

*The following are the reading comprehension questions (Chapter 21) from class on Friday; please be sure these are done for Monday, March 12th:

1). Why did Sampson envy the young girl who learned how to use a stethoscope? Explain.

2). How does Rameck support Sampson in this chapter? Give two details to support your answer.

3). What steps does Sampson take to prepare for the medical exam-the second time around? Explain.

4). What advice does Carla Dickson give to Sampson? How does Sampson’s fate change since he followed his heart? Give details. 

Monday, March 12th- 1). Type a book review of We Beat the Street; it should be at least two paragraphs typed; include your likes and dislikes with specific examples from the book. 2). Spelling Quiz tomorrow-study!

Tuesday, March 13th- 1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 98-99: “Armadillo Attributes”; be sure to complete the close reading, use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions, and be detailed with the short response; give three details from the text to support your answer. 2). Essay Exam tomorrow on We Beat the Street-you may use the novel, vocabulary handouts, and a dictionary and/or thesaurus as guides.

Wednesday, March 14th- 1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 100-102: “Animal Regeneration”; use process of elimination for each question. 2). Get Spelling Quiz signed, and make corrections. 

Thursday, March 15th– 1). Complete Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 106-107: “The Trans-Pacific Passage Toward the Gold Fields”; be sure to complete the close reading, use process of elimination for the multiple choice questions, and be detailed with the short response; give two details from the text to support your answer.
