Week of January 23, 2017-January 27, 2017

Reminders

1). Pennies for Patients Kick-Off Assembly for Grades 5-8 will take place on Monday, January 23rd at 1:00 P.M. in the auditorium. Please donate to such a great cause!

2). Catholic Schools Week begins on Sunday, January 29th; all are welcome to attend the 12:00 P.M. Mass followed by our Open House at 1:00 P.M.

Grade 5– This week, the students will continue reading the novel, Holes. They will be using context clues to develop meanings for vocabulary words that appear in Chapters 12, 13, 14, & 16-20.  They will also be creating illustrations and writing sentences with each word; the students will be reading and responding to the novel independently (Chapters 11-20) while working on a group project in class; they will be creating a time capsule based on the book thus far.  They will be drawing or creating six items (with explanations) that would give a vivid description on what is happening thus far in Holes. The students will be following a rubric for this project.

Homework:

Monday, January 23rd– 1). Create illustrations, and write sentences for each vocabulary word from today. 2). Get Holes Exam signed, and make corrections.

Tuesday, January 24th- 1). Read Chapters 11-13 in Holes; answer the reading comprehension questions.

Wednesday, January 25th- 1). Read Chapters 14-16 in Holes; summarize the chapters; incorporate only important details!

Thursday, January 26th- 1). Read Chapters 17-20 in Holes; answer the reading comprehension questions.

Upcoming Quiz/Exam: Holes– Quiz – Tuesday, January 31st- Chapters 21-23; the students will be reading in class independently and answering reading comprehension questions. 

 

Grade 6– This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words that appear in chapters 11-14 from Heaven is for Real; they will be writing sentences and creating illustrations based on these words; they will be reading some of the chapters as a class and some independently; next, the students will be working on a project based on the novel; they will be working with a partner to create a new book cover based on Heaven is For Real; they will create a title, illustration, and short summary based on events read thus far. The students will be following a rubric for this project.

Homework:

Monday, January 23rd- 1). Create illustrations and sentences for vocabulary words 11-14; use examples of sentences as a guide when writing your own. 2). Get Heaven is For Real Quiz signed, and make corrections.

Tuesday, January 24th– 1). Summarize-Heaven is For Real- Chapter 11; summarize important parts!

Wednesday, January 25th– 1). Summarize what we read in class today-Chapter 12-Heaven is For Real; create one true and false and one short answer question; be sure to answer them, too.

Thursday, January 26th- 1). Read Chapter 13-Heaven is For Real– summarize; use at least two vocabulary words; highlight or underline them.

Upcoming Quiz: Wednesday, February 1st- Heaven is for Real– Chapters 15-16 (Students will be reading independently and answering reading comprehension questions.)

 

Grade 7– This week, the students will continue reading the novel- The Outsiders . They will be using context clues to develop meanings for vocabulary words that will appear in Chapters 5 and 6; they will be analyzing with a partner Robert Frost’s poem- “Nothing Gold Can Stay”; this poem is recited by Ponyboy in Chapter 5; the students will be discussing the significance of the poem when it comes to Ponyboy’s life. The students will also be working on a project based on the novel; they will be creating a newspaper page that includes “horoscopes” for each character; they will also be developing one article that discusses an important event that has occurred in the book so far; they must provide a vivid illustration to accompany the article as well. The students will be following a rubric for this project.

Religion  This week, the students will continue focusing on Chapter 5: “Jesus Christ, The Good News”.  The students will be learning and discussing how we meet God in his Son, Jesus Christ, how we meet Jesus in the four Gospels, and how the synoptic Gospels tell the Good News from a similar viewpoint.

Homework:

Monday, January 23rd- 1). Finish reading Chapter 5 and summarize (The Outsiders); be sure to include important parts only! 2). Get The Outsiders Chapters 1-4 Exam signed, and make corrections.

Tuesday, January 24th– 1). Read Chapter 6 (The Outsiders); create five short answer questions with answers.  They must be challenging questions with detailed answers.

Wednesday, January 26th– 1).Complete the Take Home Quiz based on Chapters 5 and 6 (The Outsiders); this will be collected and graded; make sure all spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar are correct!

Thursday, January 26th- 1). No homework today!

Grade 8– This week, the students will be reading Act I Scene II from A Raisin in the Sun. We will be discussing Beneatha Younger’s friend, Joseph Asagai, and how the insurance check from Walter Younger Sr., affects the Younger family. The students will also be independently creating a business card that focuses on one of the main characters.  They will be using their knowledge of the book and their own creative thoughts to design this card. The students will be following a rubric for this project.

Homework:

Monday, January 23rd- 1). Make sure pages 54-65 are completed from A Raisin in the Sun; summarize, and create three short answer questions.

Tuesday, January 24th– 1). Summarize what we read today (66-75) from A Raisin in the Sun; make a prediction for the next scene.

Wednesday, January 25th– 1). Pretend you are one of the characters from A Raisin in the Sun; write a diary entry from their point of view; include specific details from the novel; you may add your own twist to it, too; include at least five vocabulary words (any given thus far).

Thursday, January 26th- 1). Complete that Act II Scene I take home quiz if you were not able to complete in class; this will be collected and graded; watch your spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
