Week of January 1st-January 5th

 

Reminders:

 1). Monday, January 1st- Happy New Year! School is closed.

2). Tuesday, January 2nd, school will resume.

3). 12:00 Dismissal on Friday, January 5th-Faculty Meeting. 

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 4 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book; we will be reading as a class-diary entries titled “Wagon Train Diary” and identifying each word in context.  Next, we will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be creating riddles for each word will be sharing them with the class; the students will be playing the “Riddle Game” where they have to guess each other’s riddles.  With a partner, the students will be using the vocabulary words to match the meaning, synonyms, antonyms, completing sentences, and word associations. Lastly, to review the words, the students will be engaging in various interactive games on the smartboard.

Tuesday, January 2nd– 1). Make sure your riddles from class are completed; remember to be creative with them; don’t just write the definition in them! 2). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required.

Wednesday, January 3rd- 1). Make sure you completed Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 42-43 are completed. 2). Make sure your written reading log is completed from today. 

Thursday, January 4th– 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required.

Grade 6– This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 4 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book; we will be reading an expository essay- “The Art of Science and Traditional Healing”.  Next, we will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be creating riddles for each word will be sharing them with the class; the students will be playing the “Riddle Game” where they have to guess each other’s riddles.  With a partner, the students will be using the vocabulary words to choose the right word within sentences, identify synonyms, and identify antonyms.  They will also be creating a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting traditional healing to modern-day healing.  They will be using this diagram to write an essay based on this topic.

Wednesday, January 3rd– 1). Make sure you completed Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 55-57: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms” .

Thursday, January 4th– 1). Complete in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 57-59: “Completing the Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”

Grade 7- This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 4 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book; we will be reading an <Informational Essay> “Coyotes in Legend Myth”. Next, we will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be creating riddles for each word will be sharing them with the class; the students will be playing the “Riddle Game” where they have to guess each other’s riddles.  With a partner, the students will be using the vocabulary words to choose the right word within sentences, identify synonyms, and identify antonyms.  They will be working on a writing activity in which they must persuade fellow mythical creatures that they are really doing good for the world. 

Religion– This week, the students will finish their “Advent and Christmas” Children’s Books.  We will also begin focusing on Chapter 4-discussing what the good news means to us.

Thursday, January 4th– 1). Complete in your Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 57-59: “Completing the Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”

Grade 8– This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 4 in their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book; we will be reading an <Author Profile> “Tony Cade Bambara”. Next, we will be reviewing each word’s pronunciation, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  They will be creating riddles for each word will be sharing them with the class; the students will be playing the “Riddle Game” where they have to guess each other’s riddles.  With a partner, the students will be using the vocabulary words to choose the right word within sentences, identify synonyms, and identify antonyms.  They will be working on a writing activity in which they support the fact that literature can help readers understand different kinds of people and serve as a preparation for the remedying of social ills.
