Week of January 16, 2017-January 20, 2017

Reminders:

1). School will be closed on Monday, January 17th-Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

2). Pennies for Patients Kick-Off Assembly for Grades 5-8 will take place on Monday, January 23rd at 1:00 P.M. in the auditorium. 

*It’s that time of the year again to raise money for such an amazing cause! Please help support such a wonderful organization-Pennies for Patients. Grade 5– This week, the students will continue reading the novel- Holes. They will be identifying vocabulary words that appear in chapters 7-10; they will be writing sentences based on these words; next, the students will be reading the chapters as a class and certain parts independently; they will be answering reading comprehension questions based on the chapters, too. They will be discussing difficulties Stanley experiences by digging, what he discovers, and why the Warden finds it so interesting.  They will also be discussing the significance of the yellow-spotted lizard. The students will be playing Jeopardy on chapters 1-10 on Thursday and taking an exam on these chapters, too.

Tentative Homework and Testing Schedule:

Monday, January 16th– 1). Martin Luther King Jr. Day-School Closed.

Tuesday, January 17th- 1). Make sure chapters 7 and 8 are completed (Holes); summarize BOTH chapters. You should be incorporating vocabulary words in your writing; highlight the words.

Wednesday, January 18th- 1). Make sure chapters 9 and 10 are completed (Holes); answer the reading comprehension questions. 2). Create 15 Jeopardy Questions based on chapters 1-10 (include vocabulary and questions based on the plot). 3). Jeopardy tomorrow on chapters 1-10 in Holes.

Thursday, January 19th- 1). Study for Chapters 1-10 Holes Exam for tomorrow!

Upcoming Exam: Holes– Chapters 1-10- Friday, January 20th. 

Grade 6– This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words that appear in chapters 4-10 from Heaven is for Real; they will be writing sentences based on these words; next, the students will be reading the chapters as a class and certain parts independently; they will be answering reading comprehension questions, too. They will be discussing Colton’s illness and how it deeply affects his family.

Tentative Homework and Testing Schedule:

Monday, January 16th- 1). Martin Luther King Jr. Day-School Closed.

Tuesday, January 17th– 1). Make sure sentences are completed from class based on vocabulary words from chapters 4-6. 2). Finish reading chapter 4 (Heaven is for Real)-summarize what was read-include only important details. 3). Get Chapters 1-3 Quiz signed, and make corrections.

Wednesday, January 18th– 1). Make sure chapters 5 and 6 are completed (Heaven is for Real); answer the comprehension questions from class.

Thursday, January 19th- 1). Be sure sentences using vocabulary words from chapters 7-10 are completed. 2). Make sure chapters 7 and 8 are completed (Heaven is for Real) as well-summarize what was read; create three short answer questions with answers.

Upcoming Quiz: Friday, January 20th- Heaven is for Real– Chapters 9-10 (Students will be reading independently and answering reading comprehension questions.)

Grade 7– This week, the students will continue reading the novel- The Outsiders . They will be identifying vocabulary words that appear in chapters 3-4 and writing sentences based on these words. They will be discussing the character Cherry and how she feels the Greasers and Soc’s are different. We will also be discussing the major event that involved Ponyboy and Johnny.

Religion  This week, the students will be taking their exam on Chapter 4 on Tuesday, January 17th. They will then be introduced to Chapter 5: “Jesus Christ, The Good News”.  The students will be learning and discussing how we meet God in his Son, Jesus Christ, how we meet Jesus in the four Gospels, and how the synoptic Gospels tell the Good News from a similar viewpoint.

Monday, January 16th- 1). Martin Luther King Jr. Day-School Closed. 2). Religion exam tomorrow on Chapter 4; be sure to study!! Make sure Chapter 2 is completed; be sure to answer the questions from the handout!

Tuesday, January 17th– 1). Finish reading chapter 3 (The Outsiders), and answer the comprehension questions.

Wednesday, January 18th– 1).Finish reading chapter 4 (The Outsiders), and answer the comprehension questions. 2). Jeopardy tomorrow on chapters 1-4; test will be on Friday-review all vocabulary words and questions! 3). Get Religion exam signed and corrected. 4). Optional-create 20 Jeopardy questions based on chapters 1-4.

Thursday, January 19th- 1). Study for chapters 1-4-The Outsiders Exam; be sure to review all vocabulary words and the plot.

Upcoming Exam: The Outsiders– Chapters 1-4- Friday, January 20th

 

Grade 8– This week, the students will continue reading Act I Scene I in the classic play- A Raisin in the Sun. They will be discussing Ruth’s whereabouts and the conversation between Mama Younger and Beneatha Younger and Mama’s reaction to this conversation. The students will be playing Jeopardy and taking an exam on this scene, too.

Tuesday, January 17th– 1). Review what we read today (rest of Act I Scene I) from A Raisin in the Sun, and summarize; create three short answer questions with answers.

Wednesday, January 18th– 1). Finish Jeopardy questions from class; study for Jeopardy and exam tomorrow!

Thursday, January 19th- 1). Complete a reading log-based on the book you are reading for Trimester Two.
