Week of January 15th-January 19th

 

Reminders: 

1). Monday, January 15th, is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day; school is closed.

2). All classes will begin in-class book reports starting Monday, January 22nd.

3). Class novels will begin the week of Catholic School’s Week (I decided to change this.) ; I will be discussing this with each class; below are the books we will be reading in class:

Grade 5- Holes by Louis Sachar (I have a class set; you do not have to purchase a book)

Grade 6-Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo (This book must be purchased. Any bookstore most likely will have the book; it can definitely be found on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.) 

Grade 7-The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (This book must be purchased. Any bookstore most likely will have the book; it can definitely be found on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.) 

Grade 8-We Beat the Street by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt (This book must be purchased. Any bookstore most likely will have the book; it can definitely be found on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.) 

 

Grade 5– This week, the students will be receiving a spelling list; these words must be placed in alphabetical order, written 3x each and memorized; they will be having a quiz on these words on Friday, January 19th.  The students will be receiving spelling lists more often from now on; please keep in mind this will be tentative from week to week.  The students will also be working in their Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts books. They will be focusing on the theme: Round Table Legends. The students will use details and examples from a text when explaining from a text what the text says.  They will also use details and examples from a text along with personal knowledge when explaining inferences drawn from the text.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Tuesday, January 16th– 1). Write your spelling words in alphabetical order; then write each word 3x each. Memorize the spelling list each day; quiz will be on Friday, January 19th! 2). Be sure to read for 20 minutes today if you weren’t able to in class; no written reading log is required. 3). Make sure you finish you the “Small Problems” handout!

Wednesday, January 17th– 1). Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book pages 96-97 (“Galahad and the Grail Quest”); be sure to complete the Close Reading on page 96.  Make sure the written response has TWO details from the passage to support your answer. 2). Make sure your written reading log is completed from SSR today. 3). Review spelling words!

Thursday, January 18th– 1). Study for your spelling quiz tomorrow! 2). Make sure your written reading log is completed from SSR today. 3). Get “Unit 4 Spelling/Vocabulary” exam signed, and make corrections.

*We will be starting an in class book report project starting Monday, January 22nd; be sure you are finished with your novel!

Upcoming Quiz- Spelling-Friday, January 19th

 

Grade 6– This week, the students will be receiving a spelling list; these words must be placed in alphabetical order, written 3x each and memorized; they will be having a quiz on these words on Friday, January 19th. The students will be receiving spelling lists more often from now on; please keep in mind this will be tentative from week to week. The students will also be working in their Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts books. They will be focusing on the theme: A Time to Change. The students will determine the theme and central idea of a literary text, make inferences, and identify relevant details within a text. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Upcoming Quiz-Spelling-Friday, January 19th

 

Grade 7– This week, the students will be receiving a spelling list; these words must be placed in alphabetical order, written 3x each and memorized; they will be having a quiz on these words on Friday, January 19th.   The students will be receiving spelling lists more often from now on; please keep in mind this will be tentative from week to week.  The students will also be working in their Common Core Edition Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts books. They will be focusing on the theme: Setting a New Course. The students will recognize broad messages in works of literature as themes, identify how characters’ thoughts, feelings, and actions point to a story’s theme, and lastly, analyze how the changes and growth experienced by a character develop the theme. 

Religion- The students will continue working on Chapter 5 this week; they will be reviewing the Synoptic Gospels and how the Gospel of John explores the mystery of the Incarnation.  The students will also be designing an internet ad inviting people to recognize that Jesus is God’s son.

The students will recognize broad messages in works of literature as themes, identify how characters’ thoughts, feelings, and actions point to a story’s theme, and lastly, understand how a character’s development can reveal a story’s theme.
