Week of February 26th-March 2nd

Reminders:

1). School resumes on Monday, February 26th.

2). Thursday, March 1st- Pennies for Patients Basketball Shoot Out! *This will be the last day to donate to this amazing cause!*

3). School will be closed on Friday, March 2nd, for a Professional Development Day.

 

Grade 5

This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 21-28 in Holes; they will be discussing the importance of God’s Thumb and Kissin’ Kate Barlow.  We will also be focusing on how Stanley helps Zero.  Next, the students will be identifying vocabulary words from Chapters 29-39 and creating riddles for each word with a partner. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 26th- No homework tonight! =)

Tuesday, February 27th- 1). Design a wanted ad for Kissing Kate’ Barlow; be creative!

Wednesday, February 28th- 1). Complete a written reading log. 

Thursday, March 1st- 1). No homework; Professional Development Day tomorrow. School is closed. 

Upcoming Quiz: Wednesday, March 7th-Holes– Chapters 31-32—you will be reading the novel in class and answering reading comprehension questions. 

 

Grade 6-

This week, the students will be identifying vocabulary words for Chapters 15-19 from Heaven is for Real.  They will be identifying each word’s part of speech, definition, and how it is used in context.  With these words, the students will be working with a partner to create riddles.  As we read as a class, we will be focusing on Colton’s grandfather-Pop and his sister that he never had the chance to meet.  We will also be discussing the view of Heaven from Colton’s eyes and how Jesus always hears the prayers of children.

 *We have begun reviewing for the NYS Exam as well; please continue to review the handout (will be given out on Tuesday, February, 27th) that I have created with hints/tips for the exam. Be sure to keep this handout in your binder at all times, for I will keep referring back to it during the upcoming weeks.* 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 26th- 1). Make sure your riddles are completed from class today- Chapters 15-19 vocabulary words. Read the titles for Chapters 15-19, and write at least a two paragraph prediction for these chapters; use at least three vocabulary words; highlight the words.

Tuesday, February 27th- 1). Make sure Chapters 15 and 16 are completed; summarize the chapters, and be sure the questions from class today are also completed. 

Wednesday, February 28th- 1). Make sure Chapters 17 and 18 are completed; create five short answer questions; make sure they are inferential and critical thinking questions.

Thursday, March 1st– 1). No homework; Professional Development Day tomorrow. School is closed. 

Upcoming Exam– Tuesday, March 13th- Essay Exam-Heaven is for Real. You will be able to use your book, dictionary and or thesaurus, and vocabulary handouts for this exam.  You will be given a specific question in which you must answer in essay form. You must have a solid introduction, body, and conclusion, along with the use of transition words, text based details, and 6th grade vocabulary words/vocabulary words from the novel. 

 

Grade 7-

This week, the students will finish reading, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton; we will be discussing Ponyboy and Randy’s conversation and the events that occurred inside the courtroom.  We will also be discussing Johnny’s letter to Ponyboy and its impact on Ponyboy.  Lastly, the students will be working on an essay based on the lessons Ponyboy has learned in the novel; they will be completing their rough draft and final draft in class. 

Religion- This week, the students will be creating an exam  based on the Triddum and Easter; they will will be providing an answer sheet as well.  This must eventually be typed; it will be graded, too. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 26th– 1). Make sure the classwork from from Chapter 11 in The Outsiders is completedsummarize the chapter, and create three short answer questions with answers; remember to stick to inferential and critical thinking questions. 

Tuesday, February 27th- 1). Make sure your summary and questions are completed from class-the last chapter in the novel, Chapter 12.  

Wednesday, February 28th- 1). Write or type a review of the novel; include your likes and/or dislikes with specific text based details. This should be at least two paragraphs. 2). The Triduum and Easter Exam that you have created is due tomorrow! It must be typed. I am going to check your rough draft as well. 

Thursday, March 1st- 1). No homework; Professional Development Day tomorrow. School is closed. 

Upcoming Exam: Chapters 7-12-The Outsiders-Tuesday, March 6th; review any summaries and/or questions, and the vocabulary list from these chapters. 

 

Grade 8-

This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 13-16 in We Beat the Street; they will be discussing Rameck’s unfortunate encounter, Sampson’s time in a detention center, and the college acceptance letters of Rameck, George, and Sampson. Lastly, we will be introduced to Carla Dickson and her positive influence on the young men.

 *We have begun reviewing for the NYS Exam as well; please continue to review the handout (will be given out on Tuesday, February, 27th) that I have created with hints/tips for the exam. Be sure to keep this handout in your binder at all times, for I will keep referring back to it during the upcoming weeks.* 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 26th- 1). Summarize Chapter 13; create three short answer questions with answers. 

Tuesday, February 27th- 1). Compose a letter from Sampson’s mother to Sampson based on Chapter 14; what do you think she would say to him? What advice do you think she would give to her son? Use at least three vocabulary words in your letter. This will be collected, and it must be typed.  It will be graded.

Wednesday, February 28th- 1). Make sure you finish reading Chapter 15.

Thursday, March 1st- 1). No homework; Professional Development Day tomorrow. School is closed.
