Week of February 12th-February 16th

Reminders:

1). Monday, February 12th- Red/White/Blue Day-$2 Dress Down

2). Progress Reports will be going home on Monday, February 12th.

3). Ash Wednesday is on February 14th; the students will be attending mass and receiving their ashes.

4). Progress Reports are due back on Wednesday, February 14th.

 

Grade 5– This week, the students will continue reading Holes; they will be discussing the significance of the tube with the initials KB and its importance to the plot.  The students will be introduced to the Warden of Camp Green Lake and her role in the novel. Next, the students will be focusing on Zero and Stanley’s friendship and how Stanley begins to help him.  After taking a quiz that focuses on vocabulary words from Chapters 12-20/Chapter 20 Reading Comprehension section, the students will be introduced to vocabulary words from Chapters 21-28; they will be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definitions, and use in context; with a partner/group, the students will be writing their own detailed sentences with each word.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 12th- 1). Finish reading up to Chapter 14; make sure the comprehension questions from class are completed. 

Tuesday, February 13th- 1). Finish reading Chapters 15-18; write a list of suggestions from Stanley to Zero on how he can become a great reader and writer. Write at least ten suggestions!

Wednesday, February 14th- 1). Draw an illustration that represents Chapter 19; write a paragraph that describes your picture; be detailed! 2). Study 12-20 vocabulary words!! Quiz tomorrow on the words; remember, you will be reading Chapter 20 in class and answering comprehension questions. 

Thursday, February 15th)- 1). Complete a written reading log.

Upcoming Quiz- Thursday, February 15th- Holes-Chapter 20- You will be reading the chapter in class and answering comprehension questions/vocabulary questions from Chapters 12-20.

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will continue reading Heaven is for Real; they will be discussing the Burpos’ financial crisis and Colton’s vivid description of Heaven and all he has witnessed.  The students will be taking a Reading Comprehension quiz on Chapter 13 and vocabulary from Chapters 7-14; next, they will be reading Chapter 14-“On Heaven Time” as a class and illustrating the chapter.  Lastly, the students will be working in their Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book and focusing on the poem: “Autumn Orchards”; we will be reviewing each question thoroughly, focusing on key words to help with answering the questions after reading the poem.   

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 12th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 11; make sure the comprehension questions from class are completed; summarize the chapter, too. 

Tuesday, February 13th- 1). Finish creating illustrations of Colton’s eyewitness accounts; make the pictures neat and colorful! 2). Quiz tomorrow on vocabulary words from Chapters 7-14; you will be reading Chapter 13 in class and answering reading comprehension questions. 

Wednesday, February 14th- 1). Complete a written reading log.

Thursday, February 15th- 1). Summarize Chapter 14-“On Heaven Time”; create two short answer questions with answers.                     

Upcoming Quiz- Wednesday, February 14th- Heaven is for Real-Chapter 13- You will be reading the chapter in class and answering comprehension questions/vocabulary questions from Chapters 7-14.

 

Grade 7– This week, the students will continue reading The Outsiders; they will be identifying vocabulary words from Chapters 7-12; they will be creating riddles and illustrations for each word.  The students will be reading Chapters 7-10-focusing on the Curtis’ relationship (Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop). They will be analyzing how the death of one of the greaser’s affect the rest of them greatly.    

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 12th- 1). Make sure your illustrations and riddles are completed from class today based on vocabulary words from Chapters 7-12. 2). Create 20 Jeopardy questions for Chapter 6- Religion. 3). Get Chapter 4 Quiz signed, and make corrections. 

Tuesday, February 13th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 7; answer the comprehension questions; make sure they are detailed! 2. Religion Exam tomorrow on Chapter 6. 

Wednesday, February 14th- 1). Finish reading Chapter 8- summarize the chapter. Complete the sequencel chart based not the events in the chapter! Make sure you are detailed. 

Thursday, February 15th *FREE DRESS DOWN TOMORROW FOR WINNING LAST WEEK’S PENNIES FOR PATIENTS  COMPETITION! 1). Finish reading Chapter 9; write a diary entry from Ponyboy’s point of view based on this chapter; be descriptive and detailed! This must be typed or neatly written. 

Upcoming Exam– Tuesday, March 6th- The Outsiders-Chapters 7-12- review all vocabulary, questions, classwork, and summaries. You may use the novel as a guide for details but will not be able to use the vocabulary handout. 

 

Grade 8– This week, the students will continue reading We Beat the Street; they will be reading and responding to Chapters 9-12-discussing negative peer pressure and the importance of positive peer pressure. They will also be analyzing the friendship that now develops between Sampson, George, and Rameck. The students will be taking a vocabulary quiz on the words from Chapters 7-12 and taking a reading comprehension part on Chapter 12. Lastly, the students will be working in their Ready New York CCLS English Language Arts book and focusing on a non-fiction passage: “The Basques”; we will be reviewing each question thoroughly, focusing on key words to help with answering the questions after reading the passage.   

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, February 12th- 1). Finish reading Chapters 9 and 10; make sure the comprehension questions from class are completed; summarize the chapters, too. 

Tuesday, February 13th- 1). Make sure Chapter 11 is completed; be sure the questions and summary are completed as well.. 2). Study vocabulary words from Chapters 7-11; quiz tomorrow on the words; you will also be reading Chapter 12 independently and answering reading comprehension questions.  

Wednesday, February 14th– 1). Complete a written reading log. 

Thursday, February 15th). 1). No homework tonight.
