Week of December 5th-December 9th

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

                                                                               REMINDERS:

  1. Report Cards will be distributed on Wednesday, December 7th.  Scheduled times will be sent home.
  2. There is no school on Thursday, December 8th; it is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. 

Grade 5-This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 3 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. They will be reading a magazine article: “The Flight of the Monarch” and using context clues to develop a meaning for each vocabulary word.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. They will be working independently on “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence” and “Word Study: Homographs” from the vocabulary book. The students will be playing the Sentence Game and Pic the Pick as a review. Lastly, they will be working in groups and creating a short play using all of the words and acting them out for the class.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, December 5th- 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Finish classwork-illustrations and sentences based on Unit 3 words. Be ready for Pick the Pic and the Sentence Game tomorrow!

Tuesday, December 6th– 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Complete Vocabulary Workshop pages 30-31: “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”. 3). Get Reading Comprehension Exam signed and corrected; be sure to write out the entire questions and the correct answer.

Wednesday, December 7th- 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Vocabulary Workshop pages 32-33: “Completing the Sentence” and “Word Study”.

Thursday, December 8th- No homework today; today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Upcoming Exam: Unit 3 Vocabulary- Thursday, December 15th

 

Grade 6-This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 3 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books.  They will be reading an <Archived Newspaper Article>: “This Day in 1923: The Olympic’s the Thing”; the students will read most of the words in context and do their best to develop meanings for each word.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms.  The students will also be independently working on “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Right Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Next, they will be playing Pick the Pic and the Sentence Game to review each word.  They will also be working on a writing prompt that is modeled on that of standardized exams which focuses on a quote from Euripides, a Greek tragedian of classical Athens (writer of tragedies). They will be sharing their writing with the class.

Tuesday, December 6th– 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Complete Vocabulary Workshop pages 37-41: “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Sentence”, and “Vocabulary in Context”; do not complete the “Writing: Words in Action”. 3). Get Reading Comprehension Exam signed and corrected; be sure to write out the entire questions and the correct answer.

Wednesday, December 7th- 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Finish rough draft of writing prompt from class; edit and revise; type or neatly write your final draft.

Thursday, December 8th- No homework today; today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Upcoming Exam: Unit 3 Vocabulary- Wednesday, December 14th

 

Grade 7- This week, the students will be focusing on Unit 3 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books. The students will read a <Diary Enrtry>: “Lunch at Delmonico’s” and read most of the vocabulary words in context to develop meanings.  We will then be reviewing each word’s part of speech, definition, synonyms, and antonyms. The students will independently work on “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Right Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Next, they will be playing Pick the Pic and the Sentence Game to review each word. Lastly, they will also be working on a writing prompt that is modeled on that of standardized exams. This opinion prompt focuses on the following: Is it helpful to learn about the past from a specific person’s personal experiences? They will be sharing their writing with the class.

Religion– The students will continue practicing for the Christmas play; they will also finish working on Chapter 3 and taking an open book exam on the chapter.

The students will independently work on “Choosing the Right Word”, “Synonyms”, “Antonyms”, “Completing the Right Sentence” and “Vocabulary in Context”. Next, they will be playing Pick the Pic and the Sentence Game to review each word. Lastly, they will also be working on a writing prompt that is modeled on that of standardized exams. This opinion prompt focuses on the following: What kind of exhibits would reflect the ingenuity of our times? They will be sharing their writing with the class.
