Week of December 5th to December 9th

5th

The students will begin their study of New Spain. They will be discussing when, where, and why the Spanish colonized North America. They will also be analyzing how the Spanish maintained control of North America. Lastly, the students will be discussing the introduction of slavery into the Americas.

12/5: The students will be presenting their Explorer Interview Projects.

12/6: Vocabulary page 144- Create meanings using context clues. Then create illustrations and riddles for each of the words. Make sure that your illustrations are completed because the class will be playing Pick the Pic and the Riddle Game tomorrow.

 

6th

The students will continue their study of the Mesopotamian Empires. They will be exploring how the first empires developed and will be discussing the rule of Sargon and Hammurabi. They will also be analyzing how the Assyrians influenced Southwest Asia. Lastly, the class will be discussing why Babylon was an important ancient city.

12/2: STUDY! Jeopardy Tuesday! 20 Jeopardy questions are due on Tuesday.

12/5: STUDY! Finish your Jeopardy questions!

12/6: The class will be playing Jeopardy today.

12/7: The class will be taking a test on “Mesopotamian Empires” on pages 86-93.

 

7th

The students will begin their study of the English Colonies. This week, they will be focusing on the Southern Colonies. They will be analyzing the founding of the Jamestown settlement and why it faced so many problems. They will also be exploring daily life in the Virginia Colony. The students will be exploring discussing the differences between slavery and indentured servitude and the impact of Bacon’s Rebellion. Lastly, the class will be exploring why the other Southern Colonies were founded-focusing on religious freedom and economic opportunities.

12/2: STUDY! Jeopardy- Tuesday and Test- Wednesday: “The Southern Colonies” pages 72-77. 20 Jeopardy questions are due on Tuesday.

8th

The students will begin their study of U.S. immigration in the late 1800s. They will be exploring the changing patterns of immigration (old immigrants and new immigrants), and they will be discussing what happened once these immigrants arrived in the United States (Ellis Island an Angel Island). Lastly, the class will be analyzing how these immigrants adjusted to a new life in America.

12/6: Read: Changing Patterns of Immigration” on pages 636-637 and create 8 questions and answers.  Be ready to answer each others questions in class tomorrow.

   Read and Outline: “Adjusting to a New Life” pages 638-640.

12/7: Section Assessment– page 641 #s 1-4

 

Religion

The students will be discussing the seasons of Advent and Christmas.

12/6: Read and Highlight: “During Advent, the Church Prepares for the Celebration of Christmas” on pages 155-158.  Then answer the questions below.

  1. What does the Church prepare for during Advent?
  2. How do Isaiah and John the Baptist call us to prepare for Christ’s coming?
  3. How does our preparation during Advent help us to remember the themes and events on the Jesse Tree?
