Week of April 9th-April 13th

Reminders:

1). School resumes on Monday, April 9th.

2). Mrs. Antonino’s class-“Theology of the Body” will begin on Wednesday, April 11th. She will be meeting with the 7th grade class for eight sessions.  This class will be in place of regular religion classes on the days they meet with her. 

3). The NYS ELA Exam takes place this week for Grades 6 and 8; the first day of this exam will be Wednesday, April 11th, and the following day, Thursday, April 12th, will be the final testing day. The make-up day for this exam will be on Friday, April 13th and Monday, April 16th. 

4). Trimester Two Awards Ceremony has not been scheduled yet; students and parents will be informed as soon as the date is set. 

 

Grade 5- *Novels must be in every day; you may choose a book of choice/any genre.* 

This week, the students will be identifying Unit 6 Vocabulary words from their Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop books.  We will be reading the biography :“The Surprising Life of Emily Dickinson” and reviewing the vocabulary words in context to develop mental meanings. We will then be identifying each word’s part of speech, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms. The students will be creating illustrations and writing sentences for each word; we will be playing Pictionary and the Sentence Game to review the words. The students will also be engaging in various interactive games on the SMART Board to better understand each word’s meaning. They will also be writing a story or a short play using the words. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, April 9th- 1). Make sure your illustrations and sentences based on Unit 6 words are completed.

Tuesday, April 10th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book pages 60-61: “Match the Meaning”, “Synonyms”, and “Antonyms”.

Wednesday, April 11th- 1). Complete Common Core Enriched Edition Vocabulary Workshop book page 62: “Completing the Sentence”.

Thursday, April 12th- 1). Complete a written reading log.

Upcoming Exam: Wednesday, April 18th- “Unit 6 Spelling/Vocabulary Exam”

 

Grade 6- *Novels must be in every day; you may choose a book of choice/any genre.* 

This week, the students will be reviewing for NYS ELA Exam; we will be reviewing my “NYS English Language Arts Exam Outline/Tips” handout, and work on some passages-focusing on various questions (multiple choice/short responses). On Friday, the students will be watching the movie: Heaven is for Real.  They may bring in a snack for this!

Monday, April 9th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required.

Tuesday, April 10th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). The first part of the NYS Exam is taking place tomorrow; please bring in a snack, and #2 sharpened pencils.

Thursday, April 12th- 1). There is no homework today.

Grade 7- *Novels must be in every day; you may choose a book of choice/any genre.* 

This week, the students will be identifying coordinate adjectives; they will be viewing a video on the SMART Board discussing coordinate adjectives and also receiving a handout that will fully explain how to recognize coordinate adjectives.  The students will be working with a partner to develop a story using five coordinate adjectives and five non coordinate adjectives; they will be presenting their stories to the class. 

Religion- This week, the students will have their first class with Mrs. Antonino-“Theology of the Body”; they will have a total of eight sessions with her.  In religion class, the students will begin focusing on Chapter 7: “The Promise of Salvation”. We will be discussing who or what helps us during difficult times.  The students will also be identifying free will, sin, and original sin, and discuss how God reaches out to help human kind.  We will also be discussing how God offers his people the hope of salvation. 

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, April 9th- 1). Write five sentences using coordinate adjectives and five sentences using non-coordinate adjectives; highlights the adjectives in each sentence. 

Tuesday, April 10th- 1). Complete the “Coordinate Adjectives Practice Worksheet”; follow the directions carefully! 2). Get your “Unit 6 Spelling/Vocabulary” Exam signed, and make corrections. 

Wednesday, April 11th- 1). Complete a written reading log.      2). Review rules for “Coordinate Adjectives”. 

Thursday, April 12th- 1). Religion: Read, highlight, and outline pages 78-79: “God reaches out to help humankind” and “God offers his people the hope of salvation”. Be sure to complete both activities;  you must also read: “Evil and sin-why?” (page 78); answer the question at the end of the reading.
