Week of April 30th- May 4th

Reminders:

1). The 6th and 8th NYS Mathematics Exam will be taking place on Tuesday, May 1st and Wednesday, May 2nd.

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be taking an exam on “Perfect Tense Verbs”.  Next they will be working from the Reading Street textbook and identifying vocabulary words from the biography “The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins”; as a class we will be reading the story and answering various reading comprehension questions; the students will then be working with a partner to create their own, recently discovered dinosaur; they will either be drawing or using clay to design their newest discovery.  Along with this, the students will be writing about their dinosaur- how it looks, what it eats, where it was found, etc.  The students will be following a rubric/ graphic organizer throughout this project. 

Tentative Homework Schedule:

Monday, April 30th- 1). Finish the prediction based on “The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins”. Be sure to use all of the vocabulary words. 2). Get “Perfect Tense Verbs” Exam signed, and make corrections. 

Tuesday, May 1st- 1). Write a sentence with each vocabulary word from “The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins”. 2). Finish reading the story; answer the comprehension questions from the handout.

Wednesday, May 2nd- 1). Create a new ending for the biography: “The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins”; use at least three vocabulary words! 2). Bring in any supplies/materials needed for your dinosaur project!

Thursday, May 3rd 1). Complete the “Reader Response” on page 338 from the Reading Street textbook. You must answer the “Open for Discussion”, questions one through four, and the “Look Back and Write”. 

 

Grade 6- The students will be taking the NYS Mathematics Exam this Tuesday and Wednesday, so please check the website each day.  When classes meet, the students will be identifying vocabulary and focusing on the realistic fiction story- “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. As a class we will be reading the story and answering various reading comprehension questions; the students will also be working in groups to develop a newscast-highlighting significant events from the story.  They will also be adding in their own twist focusing on Canada (the setting of the story) and adding a sports, cooking, and weather segment. They will be using a detailed guideline/rubric throughout this project. 

Monday, April 30th- 1). Finish reading up to page 287; answer the comprehension questions from the handout.  Be detailed-these will be collected and graded. 2). Get “Unit 6 Spelling/Vocabulary” Exam signed, and make corrections. 

Tuesday, May 1st- 1). Summarize what was read today from “Hatchet”; complete the “Reader Response” questions; be sure to answer the “Open for Discussion”, questions one through four, and the “Look Back and Write”. 

Wednesday, May 2nd- 1). Write sentences using each of the vocabulary words from “Hatchet”; write a synonym for each word as well. 

2). IF you were told to complete this only-type your answers to the reading comprehension questions from “Hatchet”. Be sure to place a proper heading at the top of the page:

Thursday, May 3rd 1). Complete a written reading log. 

 

Grade 7- The students will be identifying vocabulary and focusing on the science fiction story- “All Summer In A Day” by Ray Bradbury. As a class we will be reading the story and answering various reading comprehension questions; the students will also be working in groups to develop an anti-bullying special edition magazine which will focus on events from the story.  The students will be working with a partner on this project and using a detailed guideline/graphic organizers/rubric as well. 

Religion- This week, the students will continue focusing on Chapter 8: “Jesus, the Promised Messiah”. We will be discussing how Jesus is the promised Messiah and how He fulfills the hope of Israel.  We will also be discussing family traditions and how Jesus is the Son of God and true God and true man.  Lastly, the students will be reading about St. Joseph and working on the chapter review. 

Monday, April 30th- 1). Finish your prediction using all the vocabulary words from class today-“All Summer In A Day”; highlight the words in your prediction. 

Tuesday, May 1st- 1). Complete the reading comprehension questions from the handout based on the story read in class: “All Summer In A Day”. The questions will be collected and graded. 

Wednesday, May 2nd- 1). Write sentences using each of the vocabulary words.  2). Bring in any supplies you may need for your “Anti-Bullying” Magazine. 

Thursday, May 3rd 1). Religion– Make sure pages 90-91 are outlined! Complete the activities as well! 

 

Grade 8- The students will be taking the NYS Mathematics Exam this Tuesday and Wednesday, so please check the website each day.  When classes meet, the students will be identifying vocabulary and focusing on the folktale: “The Wise Old Woman” adapted by Yoshiko Uchida. As a class we will be reviewing what makes up a folktale. Next, we will be reading the folktale and answering various reading comprehension questions; the students will also be working in groups to create an autobiography from the perspective of one of the characters from the story. They will be using a specific guideline/graphic organizers/rubric for this project. 

Monday, April 30th- 1). Finish reading the folktale: “The Wise Old Woman”; answer the comprehension questions from the handout. These will be collected and graded. 

Tuesday, May 1st- 1).  Write sentences using each word from the folktale: “The Wise Old Woman”; write a synonym and an antonym for each word. 

Wednesday, May 2nd- 1). Type your answers to the reading comprehension questions from “The Wise Old Woman”. Be sure to place a proper heading at the top of the page:
