__Grade 3:__

In Chapter 3, the students will learn four meanings of subtraction, subtract 2-3- and 4- digit numbers, including money, with and without regrouping, estimate differences, regroup hundreds and dollars and thousands as hundreds, regroup with zeros, and choose the operation to solve a problem. Towards the end of the week, the students will begin to study fractions. In Chapter 12, students will find fractions as parts of a whole and parts of a set, estimate and compare fractions with like and unlike denominators, add and subtract fractions with like denominators, and solve problems using a drawing or model.

This week, in **science** the students will be learning about Types of Living Things in Chapter 1. They will identify and compare characteristics of living and nonliving things, describe the parts of cells, observe the rate of seed growth, and describe the life cycle of plans and animals.

This week, in **religion**, the children will learn that the season of Lent is a time of preparation for Easter and that the Three Days celebrate Jesus’ passing from death to new life.

We have started working a little extra on script **handwriting** in the classroom. We have been working on lower case letters with an undercurve stroke: i, t, u, w, e, l, b, h, f, k, r, s, j, p, lower case letters with an overcurve stroke: n, m, y, x, v, z, and lower case letters with a downcurve stroke: a, d, g, o, c, and q. The students are encouraged to practice script at home. I will send home some optional practice worksheets. If you would like, you can have your child hand them back in to me to check over.

__Grade 4:__

This week, in **math **the students will add and subtract fractions with like denominators and unlike denominators, rename improper fractions, add and subtract mixed numbers, find multiples, common multiples, and the least common multiple (LCM) of numbers, express probability as a fraction, find fractional parts of numbers, and solve problems by using simpler numbers.

This week, in **science** the students will focus on Chapter 15 Making and Using Electricity. Electric currents and magnets can be used for many purposes. The students will investigate how a light bulb works, read and learn about electricity and how electric charges move, investigate how electricity makes a magnet, read and learn how magnetism and electricity are related, investigate how energy changes forms, read and learn about sources of electricity, investigate how you use energy, and read and learn how people use energy resources.
