__Grade 3:__

This week, in **math** the students will finish up our chapter on Addition. In Chapter 2 the students will: add 2-, 3-, and 4-digit numbers including money, with and without regrouping, use related facts to find missing addends, use rounding to estimate sums, solve problems with the strategy of using simpler numbers.

Chapter 3 Subtraction will be introduced toward the end of the week. In Chapter 3, the students will learn four meanings of subtraction, subtract 2-3- and 4- digit numbers, including money, with and without regrouping, estimate differences, regroup hundreds and dollars and thousands as hundreds, regroup with zeros, and choose the operation to solve a problem.

This week, in **science** the students will continue to focus on Chapter 16 Work and Machines. Simple machines allow people to change the direction or size of a force. The students will investigate to find out what work is, read and learn about the different types of work and how to measure it, read and learn about different types of simple machines and how they are used.

This week, in **religion**, the children will continue to learn about the parts of the Mass and how we are sent forth from Mass to serve God and other people.

We have started working a little extra on script **handwriting** in the classroom. We have been working on lower case letters with an undercurve stroke: i, t, u, w, e, l, b, h, f, k, r, s, j, and p. The students are encouraged to practice script at home. I will send home some optional practice worksheets. If you would like, you can have your child hand them back in to me to check over.

__Grade 4:__

This week, in **math **the students will write fractions and mixed numbers in standard form and as word names, estimate fractions, identify and write equivalent fractions, find common factors and GCF of two or more numbers, write fractions in lowest terms, compare and order fractions and mixed numbers, and use logical reasoning to solve problems.

This week, in **science** the students will focus on Chapter 15 Making and Using Electricity. Electric currents and magnets can be used for many purposes. The students will investigate how a light bulb works, read and learn about electricity and how electric charges move, investigate how electricity makes a magnet, read and learn how magnetism and electricity are related, investigate how energy changes forms, read and learn about sources of electricity, investigate how you use energy, and read and learn how people use energy resources.
