Ms. Amuso – Week of 10/3/16

Grade 5

This week, the students will taking an exam on the “The Unsinkable Wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic” by Robert Ballard and Rich Archbold. For the rest of rhe week, they will be pretending that it is 1912 and they have been asked to design a newspaper cover that interests readers about the famous ship. Their newspapers can either focus on when Titanic set out on its maiden voyage or when tragedy struck. The students will provide a catchy headline, a creative illustration, and a description of the Titanic. They will be sharing their newspaper covers with the class; a rubric will be given for this project.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 3rd 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Review each day for test on “The Unsinkable Wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic” (review vocabulary/comprehension questions; there will also be a reading comprehension part on the exam.) TEST MOVED TO THURSDAY!

Tuesday, October 4th 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Study for Jeopardy! Review vocabulary and questions from class!

Wednesday, October 5th 1). Read for 20 minutes; no written reading log is required. 2). Study for exam on the story: “The Unsinkable Wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic”.

Thursday, October 6th 1). Complete a reading log.

Grade 6

This week, the students will be playing Jeopardy and taking an exam on the Drama: “Elizabeth Blackwell: Medical Pioneer”. For the remainder of the week, they will be working in their “Ready New York CCLS” books and focusing on citing evidence to make inferences, using supporting details and examples to make inferences about the text, citing textual evidence to support inferences drawn from the text, and lastly, they will be providing an analysis of the text.

Tentative Homework/Testing Schedule:

Monday, October 3rd 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Study for exam on the drama: “Elizabeth Blackwell: Medical Pioneer”. Be sure to review vocabulary/comprehension questions; there will be reading comprehension section on the exam-go over my tips for reading comprehension =).

Tuesday, October 4th 1). Complete a reading log.

Wednesday, October 5th 1). Read for 20 minutes; you do not have to complete a written reading log. 2). “Ready New York CCLS” book pages 22-23 (“Tales of Chupacabras”). Be sure to complete the “Close Reading” on page 22, do process of elimination on page 23, and use details in your answer for the short response question.

Thursday, October 6th- 1). Complete a reading log.

Grade 7

This week, the students will be taking an essay exam based on the short story: “Two Kinds: from The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan. For the remainder of the week, they will be using their “Ready New York CCLS” books. They will be focusing on identifying central ideas in an informational text and the important details that support these ideas, summarizing an informational text by restating in one’s own words the central ideas and important details, and lastly, providing an objective summary free of personal opinions or judgments.

Religion- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapter 2: “The Truth Revealed”. We will be discussing ways that we find truth in our lives, how Scripture and Tradition reveal the truth, and how the truth is written in Scripture. Lastly, we will be discussing family Traditions, how truth is handed down in Tradition, and how the Church lives by the truth.

Monday, October 3rd- 1). Complete a reading log.

Tuesday, October 4th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; you do not have have to write a written reading log. 2). Complete “Ready New York CCLS” book pages 14-15: “Kudzu: From Pretty Vine to Invasive Pet”. 3). Get “Two Kinds” exam signed.

Wednesday, October 5th- 1). Complete a reading log.

Thursday, October 6th- 1). Read for 20 minutes; you do not have to complete a written reading log. 2). Complete “Ready New York CCLS” book pages 22-25: “Race to Reach to the South Pole: Scott vs. Amundsen”.

Upcoming Quiz/Exam:

Monday, October 3- Essay Exam based on “Two Kinds”; you will be able to use your reader to give supporting details; topic will be given the day of the exam.

Grade 8

This week, the students will be taking an exam on “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. For the remainder of the week, they will be working on a post reading project. They will be creating a sequel book cover for “The Tell Tale Heart”. This creative book cover could be written as an autobiography from the narrator, a biography from the officers, etc. They must provide a one page summary of a suspenseful plot. A rubric will be given for this project as well.

Tuesday, October 4th 1). Complete a reading log. 2). Get “The Tell-Tale Heart” signed and corrected.

Wednesday, October 5th1). Complete a reading log. 2). Choose one of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems; read and analyze the poem; write a summary of what you feel the poem is about; bring the poem to class.

Thursday, October 6th 1). Complete a reading log.
