Mrs. Giacalone – Week of 11/14/16

Grade 5

The class will begin their study of European Exploration. They will be analyzing how the Turks’ capture of Constantinople affected European trade. They will also be discussing Portugal’s role in discovering a new trade route to Asia. Lastly, the students will be exploring the expeditions of Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama.

11/14: Finish picking out the important facts for “Portugal Leads the Way” on pages 115-118.

11/15: Read and pick out important facts for “Dias and Da Gama” on pages 118-119.

STUDY! Jeopardy and Test- Friday- “Background to European Exploration” on pages 114-119. 20 Jeopardy questions are due on Friday.

11/18: The class will be playing Jeopardy and taking a test on “Background to European Exploration” on pages 114-119.

Current Event Articles- are due on Monday. You need one national article and one international article. You must read and highlight your articles at home. You must also pick at least three vocabulary words from each article. You will be answering questions about your article during Social Studies Class on Monday. ARTICLES MUST DEAL WITH POLITICS, THE ECONOMY, THE ENVIRONMENT, OR RELIGIOUS ISSUES. The students will be presenting their current events on Wednesday.

Grade 6

Project-“Building a Mesopotamian City-State”: This week the students will be working with a partner to create a diorama of a Mesopotamian city-state. They will be following a detailed list what is needed in each city-state. Please make sure that you have your shoebox and whatever other materials that you need by Monday.

11/18: During Social Studies Class the students will be working on their Current Event Assignments.

Grade 7

The students will begin their study of European empires in the Americas. They will be analyzing the events that took place in Europe that affected North American settlements. The students will also be discussing how the search for a Northwest Passage allowed for exploration and colonization of North America. Lastly, the class will be examining the English, French, and Dutch presence in the New World.

The students will also be analyzing the beginnings of slavery in the Americas.

11/10: *STUDY! Jeopardy-Tuesday and Test-Wednesday: “The Race for Empires” on pages 52-57. 20 Jeopardy questions are due on Tuesday!

Grade 8

The class will begin their study of the Second Industrial Revolution. They will be discussing the impact that the Bessemer process had in America during the late 1800s. The students will also be analyzing how the advances in the use of oil and electricity improved communications and transportation. Lastly, the class will be exploring how the rush of inventions changed Americans’ lives.

The students will also be beginning their study of “Big Business”. They will be discussing how the rise of corporations and powerful business leaders led to the dominance of big business in the United States. Lastly, they will explore why people and the government began to question the methods of big business.

11/10: Read: “Breakthroughs in Steel Processing” and “The Use of Oil and Electricity” on pages 614-617. Then answer the questions below.

1. How did the Bessemer process change the steel industry?

2. How did the Bessemer process affect industry in the United States?

3. What were some of the uses of kerosene?

4. What problem did Thomas Edison face regarding the use of electricity and how did he solve it?

5. What effect did competition have on the use of electricity?

11/14: Section 1 Assessment- page 618 #s 1-4.

11/15: Create a riddle for each of the “Key Terms and People” on page 619. Make sure that your illustrations are finished because the class will be playing Pick the Pic and the Riddle Game tomorrow.

11/16: Read and Outline: “Dominance of Big Business” on pages 619-621. Then answer the questions below.

1.What role do stockholders play in corporations?

2. Why do you think Andrew Carnegie was one of the most admired business people of his time? Explain.

Religion

The class will be discussing that through humanity sin entered the world. They will be exploring that God created human beings, body and soul, and that God called us to be stewards of creation. Lastly, the students will be discussing the effects of Original Sin.
