Grade 5

This week the students will be working on current events. They will be reading and discussing events that took place nationally and internationally.

11/18: Current Event Articles- are due on Monday. You need one national article and one international article. You must read and highlight your articles at home. You must also pick at least three vocabulary words from each article. You will be answering questions about your article during Social Studies Class on Monday. ARTICLES MUST DEAL WITH POLITICS, THE ECONOMY, THE ENVIRONMENT, SCIENCE, HEALTH, OR RELIGIOUS ISSUES. The students will be presenting their current events on Tuesday. (Time News for Kids is a good site to get articles.)

11/21: The students will be working on their current event assignment in class. If they did not answer all of the questions in class, they will have to finish it for homework.

11/22: The students will be presenting their current events.

*Explorer Interview Project- During Social Studies Class, the students picked an explorer to research. They were given detailed directions and a rubric to follow for this project. ALL RESEARCH IS DUE ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28th! PICTURES AND MAPS OF THE EXPLORER ARE DUE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH!

Grade 6

Grade 8
The class will begin their study of the Second Industrial Revolution. They will be discussing the impact that the Bessemer process had in America during the late 1800s. The students will also be analyzing how the advances in the use of oil and electricity improved communications and transportation. Lastly, the class will be exploring how the rush of inventions changed Americans’ lives.

The students will also be beginning their study of “Big Business”. They will be discussing how the rise of corporations and powerful business leaders led to the dominance of big business in the United States. Lastly, they will explore why people and the government began to question the methods of big business.

11/18: STUDY! Jeopardy-Monday and Test- Tuesday: “The Second Industrial Revolution” and “Big Business” on pages 614-622. 20 Jeopardy questions are due on Monday.

11/21: The class will be playing Jeopardy today. 20 Jeopardy questions are due today.

11/22: The class will be taking a test on “ The Second Industrial Revolution” and “Big Business” pages 614-622.

Religion

The class will be discussing that through humanity sin entered the world. They will be exploring that God created human beings, body and soul, and that God called us to be stewards of creation. Lastly, the students will be discussing the effects of Original Sin. The students will also be practicing for the Christmas show.

11/21: Read and highlight- “God Called Us to be Stewards of Creation” on pages 46-47. Complete the We Respond activity on page 47. Then answer the questions below.

1. What is the meaning of the garden?

2. What does naming the animals signify?

3. How do humans share in God’s creation?

4. How did the biblical writers show that we are called to be caretakers of creation?

5. How do the pictures on pages 46-47 represent stewardship?

11/22: Read and highlight- “Evil Entered the World Through a Human Act” on page 48. Then answer the questions below.

1. What are the consequences of free will?

2. What were the consequences of the choice humanity made?

3. What does the Garden of Eden symbolize?

4. Upon what does our friendship with God depend?

*STUDY! Quiz- Wednesday: “People Turn from God” on pages 43-54.
