January 2nd-January 4th

 

Reminders:

1). School resumes on Wednesday, January 2, 2019

2). Friday, January 4th, is a 12:00 P.M. dismissal for a faculty meeting. 

 

Grade 5- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 23-28 in Holes; they will be creating a T-chart-comparing the characters Kate Barlow and Trout Walker; they will be using the information in the chart to write two paragraphs comparing the two characters.  Next, the students will be developing a news article based on events in Chapter 26; they will be sharing their articles and finishing Part One of the novel.

Tentative Homework/ Testing Schedule:

Wednesday, January 2nd- 1). Be sure your T-chart and writing are completed from class based on Trout Walker and Kate Barlow. 2). Read Chapters 24 and 25 in Holes; create two higher order thinking questions with answers. 

Thursday, January 3rd- 1). Write or type a final draft of your news article from class; you must also hand in your rough draft from class that you edited and revised. 2). Get your “Kate Barlow and Trout Walker” writing signed!

Upcoming Exam: Thursday, January 10th- The students will be reading certain chapters in Holes and answering comprehension questions; specific chapters will be given next week.

 

Grade 6- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 16-18 in Heaven is for Real. They will be reading about Colton’s encounter of “Pop” and developing a text message conversation between the two characters.  The students will also be reading about Colton’s “other sister” discussion with his mother, Sonja. They will be writing a diary entry from Sonja’s perspective based on this revelation.  After sharing their diary entries, the students will be reading about God’s vivid description of God’s throne. 

Tentative Homework/ Testing Schedule:

Wednesday, January 2nd- 1). Finish the text messaging conversation between Colton and Pop; be creative!

Thursday, January 3rd- 1). Write or type your final draft of the diary entry from Sonja’s perspective; include specific details from the chapter. Use at least three vocabulary words in your writing! You must hand in your rough draft from class that you edited and revised.

Upcoming Exam: Thursday, January 10th- The students will be reading certain chapters in Heaven is for Real and answering comprehension questions; specific chapters will be given next week.

 

Grade 7- This week, the students finish reading The Outsiders; they will be taking an essay exam on the novel as well. Lastly, the class will be watching the movie-comparing and contrasting it to the novel. 

Religion- This week, the students will begin to focus on Chapter 4: “God, Our Loving Father”; they will discuss ways they know they are truly loved by God. They will be reading about the first and second account of creation and working with a partner to depict God in the act of creation.

Tentative Homework/ Testing Schedule:

Wednesday, January 2nd- 1). Write a book review of the novel; include your likes and/or dislikes. Be detailed! 2). Get your permission slip signed to watch the movie tomorrow; you can bring a snack, too!

Thursday, January 3rd- 1). Religion-read and outline page 45: “God invites us into a loving relationship with him”; complete the activity; also, read “What’s in a word?” in the blue box; answer the question in the box as well. 2). Essay exam tomorrow on The Outsiders; you may use your novel and vocabulary handouts for this exam. 3). If I asked you, please make corrections to your book review and hand in a new copy for tomorrow!

Upcoming Exam: Friday, January 4th- The students will be taking an essay exam on The Outsiders; they may use the novel and vocabulary handouts for this exam. 

 

Grade 8- This week, the students will be focusing on Chapters 11 and 12 in We Beat the Street. They will be discussing the seriousness of expulsion and how a foolish act almost ruined Rameck’s academic future; they will be developing a diary entry from Rameck’s perspective based on a serious matter. Lastly, they will be reading about how a presentation from a Seton Hall University representative changed the boys’ lives forever. 

Tentative Homework/ Testing Schedule:

Wednesday, January 2nd- 1). Develop three short answer questions with answers based on Chapter 11; remember, they must be higher order thinking questions. 

Thursday, January 3rd- 1). Write or type your final draft of the diary entry from either Rameck or his teacher’s perspective; include specific details from the chapter. Use at least three vocabulary words in your writing! You must hand in your rough draft from class that you edited and revised.
