Grade 3: Week of 5/11-5/15

This week, the third grade will…

  • Complete Vocabulary Workshop Unit 14 and continue Grammar Unit 6: Capitalization, Punctuation and Spelling.
  • Read and discuss the final chapters of Peter Pan.
  • Continue Chapter 8: Understanding Fractions in Math. 
  • Begin Chapter 11: The Parish is Our Home in Religion.
  • Research endangered animals in order to further our understanding of ecosystems, habitats and preservation.

*Please write your name, date and subject on the top of all of your work.

Please submit classwork to jfrey@olgcahb.org by 6 pm on the dates listed below. You can submit assignments by sending images of your workbook/writing or typing into the body of the email if preferred (when possible). If an assignment is posted to Google Classroom, you can also mark your answers and submit directly.

  • Vocabulary – Quiz on Unit 14 – Thursday, 5/14 – Friday, 5/15

Monday 5/11:

*Zoom Meeting at 1:30 pm: Math (bring book and paper)

  • Vocabulary: Write sentences and illustrate using 3 words from Unit 14 (pages 142-143). Send an image of your work.
  • Grammar: Lesson 46: Parts of a Letter, complete Proofreading on page 210 and send an image of your work.
  • Reading: Peter Pan – Review vivid and precise words on Zoom. Keep in mind what we discussed about descriptive and precise words and answer the following writing prompt in complete sentences: See Google Classroom.
  • Math: Begin Lesson 8.5 Fractions on a Number Line on Zoom, pages 467-468, 469 (#5-9 only). Complete My Name in Fractions WS (on Google Classroom) and send an image of your work. You can print the WS or draw and label a number line on paper.
  • Religion: Apply what you’ve learned from Ch. 10 by filling out My Prayer List WS on Google Classroom. You can print the page or write the information on lined paper. Send an image of your work.
  • Science: Fill out flashcards from pages 201-204 in your book (you don’t need the blank cards). Cut out the cards and keep them together so you can study them for the upcoming quiz (late next week). Finish reading Island: A Story of the Galapagos by Jason Chin on Zoom if time allows.

Tuesday 5/12:

*Zoom Meeting at 1:30 pm: Math (bring book and paper)

  • Vocabulary: Write sentences and illustrate using 3 words from Unit 14 (pages 142-143). Send an image of your work.
  • Grammar: Lesson 46: Parts of a Letter, complete Write assignment on page 211. Send an image of your work.
  • Reading: Peter Pan – Read Ch. 15 and answer the following comprehension questions:
  1. Why did the crocodile follow Peter?
  2. Who won the sword fight and how did they win?
  • Math: 8.5 Fractions on a Number Line, complete pages 471 (#1-4) and 472 (#1-2) together on Zoom. Send an image of your work.
  • Religion: Ch. 11: Read We Belong to a Parish, pages 131-133. Highlight or underline key details. Answer questions, complete We Respond and send an image of your work.
  • Science: Complete the following steps of the research project (project is due next Wednesday, May 20) and send an image of your notes. Keep these notes together so you can rewrite them in paragraph form when research is complete.

-Choose an endangered animal to research. You can use the following websites or search on your own: Links on Google Classroom.

-What is the name of its typical habitat? What are the main parts of the habitat which           provide basic needs like shelter, water, food and living space?

-What is the ecosystem called? The endangered animals might be found in several different ecosystems. List at least one.

Wednesday 5/13:

*Zoom Meeting at 1:30 pm: Grammar, Reading (bring Grammar book and Peter Pan notes on Ch. 14-15)

  • Vocabulary: Complete Synonym/Antonym on page 145 and study for your quiz tomorrow.
  • Grammar: Lesson 47: Quotations, discuss on Zoom and complete pages 212 and 213 (Part A #8-10 only). Send an image of your work.
  • Reading: Peter Pan – Review answers to Ch. 14-15 questions on Zoom. Bring notes to make any necessary revisions.
  • Math: Ch. 8: Mid-Chapter Checkpoint, pages 473-474. Complete on your own and send an image of your work.
  • Religion: Read about Mary, Mother of God, for whom our parish is named: Link on Google Classroom.
  • Science: Continue working on research project – answer the following questions:

-Why is this animal endangered? What are the specific problems that threaten the animal’s survival? Consider the types of ecosystem changes we discussed (natural events and/or human activities) that can make an ecosystem imbalanced.

-Is there anything we can do to protect this animal? Can we make positive changes in their ecosystem that would improve their chances of survival?

Thursday 5/14:

*Zoom Meeting at 1:30 pm: Science

  • Vocabulary: Complete the following which will count as your quiz on this unit: Match the Meaning (page 144), Completing the Sentence (page 146). Each answer will count as one point. Send an image of your work.
  • Grammar: Lesson 47: Quotations, complete Part B on page 213. Send an image of your work.
  • Reading: Peter Pan – Read Ch. 16 and answer the following comprehension questions:
  1. What had changed at the Darlings’ home when the children returned?
  2. What was Peter’s plan?
  3. How did Peter’s behavior change in this chapter?
  • Math: Complete Reteach/Enrich WS’s on 8.4-8.5 (in packet on Google Classroom). Complete 8-11, 8-12, 8-13 and 8-14 (pages 7-10 in the packet) by tomorrow night. Send an image of your work.
  • Religion: Read Many People Serve Our Parish, pages 134-135. Highlight or underline key details. Answer questions, complete We Respond and send an image of your work.
  • Science: Finish reading Island: A Story of the Galapagos by Jason Chin from slides on Zoom. Continue research project – Draw the animal in its habitat and include details that show the features that meet their basic survival needs (shelter, water, food and living space).

Specials:

  • Handwriting – Check Mrs. Sindone’s class page and Google Classroom page for assignments.
  • Italian – Check Mrs. Franchi’s class page for assignments.

Friday 5/15:

*No Zoom Meeting today – Review/Enrichment Activities

Specials:

  • Italian – Check Mrs. Franchi’s class page for assignments.
  • Technology – Check Mrs. Limitone’s class page for assignments. Continue work on Tynker and Hour of Code.
  • Finish Reteach/Enrich pages from yesterday’s Math assignment if needed.
  • Catch up on research for Science if needed. You will have next Monday and Tuesday to finish your drawing and rewrite your notes in paragraph form. The project is due next Wednesday, May 20.
  • Study Science Vocabulary cards (quiz will be late next week).
  • The Country Study Research Report will be due next Friday, 5/22. Please finish up if needed.
